Tom Cruise’s Movie Franchise That Led to 1 of the Most Successful Action Shows Is Dominating the Charts Again

Most people now know Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher, thanks to the Prime Video series, but he wasn’t the first to play the character. Tom Cruise previously portrayed the role in two films, and the first one is currently popular on Paramount+.

The action movie Jack Reacher is currently a popular title on Paramount+, ranking at No. 10 in the United States. According to data from FlixPatrol, it’s been frequently appearing in the Top 10 over the past few weeks, even reaching No. 5 on January 1st – its highest position so far this year. Starring Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, the film follows a skilled military sniper who is investigated for a mass shooting, and Reacher is brought in to help solve the case.

The 2012 film Jack Reacher was adapted from Lee Child’s 2005 novel, One Shot. Christopher McQuarrie, who later collaborated with Tom Cruise on the newest Mission: Impossible films, both wrote and directed it. Though critics were somewhat divided – the film received a 64% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – it performed well at the box office, earning over $215 million globally on a $60 million budget.

Four years after the first Jack Reacher film, Paramount released a sequel called Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in 2016. The movie stars Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, who teams up with Army Major Susan Turner (played by Cobie Smulders, known from the Marvel Cinematic Universe) while on the run after she’s falsely accused of espionage. The film is based on Lee Child’s 2013 novel of the same name.

Although critics and audiences liked the action and Tom Cruise’s acting, Never Go Back didn’t perform as well at the box office as the first movie. It earned $162 million worldwide, which wasn’t enough for Paramount, so they decided to cancel plans for another sequel.

Jack Reacher Was Revived as a Streaming Series

While Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie continue to make successful Mission: Impossible films for Paramount, Skydance sold the rights to the Jack Reacher stories to Amazon. Amazon then created a Jack Reacher series for its Prime Video streaming service, which is now three seasons in. Currently, a fourth season, adapting Lee Child’s Gone Tomorrow, and a spin-off series are being finished and will be released soon.

Production on Season 4 of Reacher finished in November 2025. Like previous seasons, the show will feature a new group of characters alongside the returning lead actor. Joining Alan Ritchson as main cast members are Christopher Marquette as Jake Merrick, Sydelle Noel as Tamara Green, Agnez Mo as Lila Hoth, Anggun as Amisha Hoth, and Kevin Corrigan as Russell Plum.

Before Season 4 of Reacher arrives, Alan Ritchson will appear in a new series. This series will focus on Frances Neagley, a popular character played by Maria Sten, who has been featured in the previous three seasons of Reacher.

Jack Reacher is available to stream on Paramount+.
