Despite being released on Apple TV+ six years ago, Tom Hanks’ film Greyhound continues to be popular with viewers.
The 2020 World War II movie starring Tom Hanks as a determined Navy captain relentlessly pursued by German U-boats is proving popular on streaming services in 2026. It recently reached the top ten most-watched films on Apple TV worldwide, as of January 25th.
Greyhound is particularly successful in Paraguay, Slovenia, and Tajikistan, where it ranks second in the market. It’s also performing well in Cambodia, Greece, and South Korea, holding the third position in each of those countries.
The intense war movie is currently a top 5 hit on Apple TV in ten countries: Egypt, Grenada, Mongolia, Azerbaijan, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Lithuania, Niger, and Norway.
The movie Greyhound is also becoming popular in the UK, currently ranking as the sixth most-watched film. It’s a thrilling story about a dangerous journey across the Atlantic during World War II, where a naval convoy faced constant threat from German U-boats.
Originally intended for movie theaters, Greyhound, written by and starring Tom Hanks, ended up being released directly for streaming due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reviews for Greyhound were generally favorable, giving it a 78% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers largely agreed with critics, as reflected in the film’s 76% audience score, indicating they also enjoyed Tom Hanks’ portrayal of courage and resilience at sea during World War II.
Critics admired Greyhound for its impressive technical aspects and its efficient, quick-moving plot. However, many critics thought the characters weren’t developed enough in Hanks’ film.
ScreenRant’s review of Greyhound was generally unenthusiastic. While Tom Hanks received praise for his thorough research, critics felt he didn’t fully delve into the emotional depths of his character, Captain Ernest Krause. The review stated that the film felt more like an informative history lesson than a compelling drama, despite Hanks’ evident dedication to bringing the story to life.
Tom Hanks isn’t finished with the story of Greyhound. A sequel was announced in 2022, and recent reports indicate filming will begin in Australia in January 2026. Hanks will reprise his role as Captain Krause, and Aaron Schneider is set to return as director.
The next installment of Greyhound will likely follow Captain Krause’s adventures from the D-Day landings to the end of World War II in the Pacific.
