Tom Hardy’s Action Sci-Fi Thriller That Ended a Franchise Quietly Becomes a Streaming Sensation

The final entry in Tom Hardy’s film trilogy is making a run for the top of the streaming charts.

According to FlixPatrol, Venom: The Last Dance is now the fourth most popular movie on HBO Max. The film has also broken into the top ten charts in over a dozen countries worldwide, including Argentina, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic.

Kelly Marcel wrote and directed the film, bringing Eddie Brock and Venom to life. The story follows Eddie and Venom as they unexpectedly return to their own world, only to become the prime suspects in a shocking murder and forced to evade the police.

Throughout the movie, Eddie and Venom discover a large-scale plot to turn Symbiotes into weapons, and they learn about Knull, the original creator of the Symbiotes, who is trying to escape his long-held prison. What starts as a fight for survival quickly becomes a battle to save the entire universe.

Joining Tom Hardy in Venom: The Last Dance are Juno Temple as Doctor Theodora “Teddy” Paine, Stephen Graham as ex-NYPD Detective Patrick Mulligan, Clark Backo as researcher Sadie “Christmas,” and Rhys Ifans as the quirky alien enthusiast, Martin Moon. The film also features Andy Serkis portraying the iconic villain, Knull.

The movie was a big hit with audiences, earning over $478.9 million in theaters on a $120 million production cost. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes reports a 79% audience score based on over 5,000 reviews.

While audiences enjoyed the film, critics had a more mixed reaction to Venom: The Last Dance, giving it a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 225 reviews. Despite this, the film received nominations for several prestigious awards, including the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film and a Visual Effects Society Award for its outstanding effects.

Why Venom: The Last Dance Was Always Going to End the Series

Kelly Marcel, the writer of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and co-writer of the first Venom film, recently revealed that the Venom movies were always planned as a trilogy. She wrote and directed the third film, Venom: The Last Dance, with the ending in mind from the very beginning.

She explained that working on the first two films led the team to believe this would be the last one, and they knew it would be both exciting and moving. Marcel added that after seven years with the project, he and Tom were determined to see it through from beginning to end, feeling it was the perfect time and the right story to conclude with.

Venom: The Last Dance is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
