Tom Hiddleston is incredibly busy right now, working on the upcoming Marvel movie Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to come out in December 2026. While fans are speculating about his character’s role and allegiances after his appearance in Loki, the award-winning actor recently made time to recognize others.
During a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast with Josh Horowitz, Tom Hiddleston answered a variety of fun questions, including his favorite comedies and horror movies. The conversation took an interesting turn when he was asked, by the host, who his favorite actor to play Spider-Man was.
He wouldn’t say why, but Tom Holland added, with a mischievous smile like Loki, “I mean no disrespect to Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield.”
Tobey Maguire Is Still King of The Spider-Men
It’s understandable, given that Hiddleston has spent years filming with and befriending Tom Holland, who is currently working on his fourth Spider-Man film and the start of a new trilogy, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Hiddleston then went above and beyond by essentially declaring Tobey Maguire the definitive Spider-Man, acknowledging Maguire’s original early 2000s Spider-Man films as the best, a sentiment Hiddleston shares with many Spider-Man fans.
People often debate who the best Spider-Man is, with many favoring Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield, but Tom Hiddleston is right to acknowledge Maguire’s significant impact. Even though Hiddleston personally prefers Tom Holland, Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy – featuring Kirsten Dunst and Willem Dafoe – was groundbreaking for Marvel. It paved the way for the modern superhero movie boom, making studios confident enough to invest huge amounts of money in the genre.
Jack Nicholson’s Joker Birthed Tom Hiddleston’s Loki
Hiddleston also made sure to praise another actor and project – his move from Marvel to DC Comics and DC Studios. He then connected his admiration for Tobey Maguire and Spider-Man to the question of what he considers the greatest comic book movie ever made.
Hiddleston playfully asked if he could mention a movie he wasn’t in, then jokingly imagined being scolded. He immediately thought of Tim Burton’s Batman, starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson, as the first film that came to mind when asked about movies he hadn’t appeared in.
Marvel fans everywhere owe a thank you to Tom Hiddleston, who has given us the iconic and unforgettable performance of Loki throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After hearing Tom Hiddleston compare Jack Nicholson’s Joker to his own Loki, it’s hard to ignore the parallels – if you hadn’t noticed them already. Nicholson’s iconic performance as Batman’s villain in 1989 clearly influenced the way Hiddleston portrays Loki.
Hiddleston admitted he knew his character was the bad guy, but he was struck by how much fun the villain seemed to be having – someone he recognized in a personal way. He was captivated by the character’s charm, creativity, and freedom. He also expressed his fondness for Michael Keaton’s portrayal of both Bruce Wayne and Batman, and the interesting relationship between the two. Hiddleston then clarified that when he first started playing Loki, he intentionally channeled the spirit of Jack Nicholson’s performance while developing the character.
While you’re enjoying Owen Wilson as Hiddleson in future Avengers movies like Doomsday and Secret Wars, don’t forget to appreciate the classic Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire and Tim Burton’s Batman – those iconic franchises still influence and deserve recognition alongside today’s blockbusters.
