Tom Sandoval Defends Himself From AGT Judges After Shaky Performance

Tom Sandoval is stepping out into the blinding lights.

Previously from Vanderpump Rules, Tom Sandoval and his group, The Most Extras, advanced to the quarterfinals in America’s Got Talent. On August 19th, they showcased their rendition of “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd during this NBC contest.

The judges Howie Mandel, Mel B, and Sofía Vergara applauded Tom for his enthusiasm, but Simon Cowell felt that the overall performance lacked appeal. Midway through, he pressed the buzzer and criticized the performer, saying, “Unfortunately, it didn’t sound very good.

Tom mentioned that just as he was about to start, his earphones seemed to malfunction, causing him to perform without being able to hear the audio cues, making it feel like he was performing in the dark.

Despite Mel B’s criticism, Tom maintained that he wasn’t offering excuses for his less-than-perfect performance. Instead, he expressed that he thoroughly enjoyed himself, saying, “I had a great time.

In June, the founder of TomTom stepped onto America’s Got Talent stage for the first time, singing a cover of A-ha’s famous song “Take on Me.” The performance was highly acclaimed by the judges, with Mel B expressing that Tom’s unique version brought her a wave of joy.

The former Spice Girl said, “You brought a smile to my face,” and added, “That tune is among my favorites, and it seemed like everyone was having a great time together.

Indeed, as Tom later noted, there was a reason why he chose to take on “Take on Me.”

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must admit that selecting just one standout track among our vast music collection can prove quite challenging. However, when it comes to songs that resonated deeply with me during my formative years, A-ha’s ‘Take on Me’ undeniably holds a special place. The mesmerizing music video captured my imagination like no other, and I never dared to dream that one day I might attempt to sing this iconic song or replicate those captivating notes.

As a fervent admirer, I must say, ever since I honed my singing skills under the guidance of vocal coaches, the sensation of being able to hit those notes has been nothing short of euphoric. The pride I feel when I perform a song is indescribable, and it’s a sense of accomplishment I cherish deeply.

And as for why he decided to audition for AGT

Tom expressed his thoughts by saying, “I saw this as an excellent chance for the band to shine and gain some visibility. After their unwavering support during the 2023 Scandoval scandal, I wanted to give something back to them. It was indeed frightening, yet thrilling, and I’m overjoyed that I took on this opportunity.

As a die-hard enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement! Every week, I eagerly tune in to America’s Got Talent, airing every Tuesday at 8 p.m., right here on NBC. If you’re intrigued by what happens off-camera, then join me as we unravel the captivating behind-the-scenes stories… keep reading!

Contestants face a lengthy process before they perform for the judges during season 20. The panel consists of Howie Mandel, Mel B, Sofía Vergara, and Simon Cowell. To expand reach, NBCUniversal hosts open call auditions online, allowing anyone to sign up for an audition with their casting team and producers. If deemed promising, candidates progress to meet the executive producers. Upon approval, they move forward to audition in front of the judges, after which the process unfolds further. Contestants can apply through in-person or virtual open calls, or submit a video audition.

Make sure to set your time limits! As per the audition instructions, you’ll get approximately 90 seconds to display your talents during the open auditions. Keep in mind, though, that producers have the ability to adjust audition durations as needed.

Yes, there are several things that aren’t permitted. For example, open flames and special rigging aren’t allowed during auditions open to everyone. If an act involves animals, competitors must complete an Animal Information Form and provide the animal’s vaccination records. Additionally, coolers (except for medical reasons), fireworks, weapons, sharp tools, mace/pepper spray, illegal substances, alcohol, and props requiring fire or pyrotechnics are all forbidden according to the rules.

As a dedicated contestant on America’s Got Talent, once I make it past the preliminary rounds, I’ll have the opportunity to showcase my talent in front of the esteemed judges – without having to bear the full travel cost. The production team will cover my airfare if I need to fly long distances, or provide me with bus, train, or gas reimbursement for local travel. To add to this convenience, they also arrange accommodation and offer a daily stipend for food and other expenses during the judges’ audition round.

According to the rules for America’s Got Talent auditions, the show doesn’t offer hair and makeup assistance during the initial round when the judges evaluate the contestants; however, it is expected that competitors will be fully prepared for their close-ups, often referred to as being “camera ready.” Interestingly, the show does provide these services for contestants in later rounds. For instance, Tonia Green, an AGT makeup artist, mentioned on Instagram that during season 19 alone, they worked with hundreds of contestants.

Contestants indeed get to practice their performances during rehearsals, but that’s not the only aspect of the show they prepare for. In a 2024 YouTube video, Sofie Dossi – a former contestant on America’s Got Talent – shared that there’s also something called a results rehearsal. This is important to ensure everyone knows their way around if eliminated or if they advance, and it helps the crew decide on lighting and camera angles.

The winner of America’s Got Talent receives a grand prize worth $1 million, but instead of receiving the full amount immediately, they have two options:

1. Receive their winnings in a 40-year financial annuity, which means they would get paid annually for the next 40 years.
2. Choose to receive the present value of the annuity as a lump sum payment right away.

If the winner opts for the annuity payments, they would receive approximately $25,000 per year before taxes over the course of 40 years.
