The cancellation of the show upset many fans, who had praised it as the best new police drama when it premiered in 2010. The show’s star also felt the decision was unfair, and even today, despite the continuation of the story through spinoff series, he still struggles with the cancellation and isn’t sure he’d want to be involved in the new shows.
Tom Selleck portrayed Frank Reagan for all 14 seasons of the show, which ran from 2010 to 2024. He starred with actors like Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, and Will Estes. The series successfully blended police procedural action with family drama, becoming a popular program for CBS. Selleck has expressed confusion over the cancellation, as the show consistently maintained strong viewership. He recently shared his thoughts with Hour Detroit, stating:
I was really surprised and still don’t understand why CBS cancelled the show. At the time, we were a top-ten hit – actually number six when you don’t count football games. I’ve worked on many sets with difficult atmospheres, but the ‘Blue Bloods’ cast and crew were always professional and genuinely liked each other, which is unusual in this industry.
Would Tom Selleck Join Donnie Wahlberg in ‘Boston Blue’?

CBS
It’s been nearly a month since Boston Blue premiered on CBS, building on the world of Blue Bloods. The new show follows Donnie Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan, as he moves to the Boston Police Department to stay close to his son, Sean, who is a new officer there. While Boston Blue initially seemed like a fresh start after Blue Bloods ended, several original cast members, including Bridget Moynahan and Marisa Ramirez, have already appeared in the spin-off. This has fans wondering if Tom Selleck might also make an appearance. Selleck recently stated:
I’m not sure I’d be interested in another show like ‘Boston Blue’. I feel a responsibility to ensure ‘Blue Bloods’ is remembered as a significant television show, but I don’t necessarily want to continue playing Frank Reagan forever. It’s impossible to say what will happen, but I’d love to work on a comedy – I’ve had success with them in the past.
As a critic, I’m hearing that if Boston Blue gets picked up for multiple seasons, we might see Tom Selleck make a cameo, but don’t expect him to become a main character. Honestly, it’s pretty clear Selleck still isn’t sure why Blue Bloods ended, and it feels a little strange seeing Boston Blue essentially recreate the same show in a new city without him. It’s understandable, then, that he’d rather move on and let Blue Bloods remain a highlight of his career.
