The next Tomb Raider game, titled Catalyst, is expected to launch in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. Developers at Crystal Dynamics are planning a significant shift in the series’ gameplay. It’s been eight years since the last major Tomb Raider release, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and fans are eager to see how the new game will build upon and evolve the action-adventure experience.
A leak from X user V Scooper, who previously revealed details about the game in 2024, suggests that the new Tomb Raider Catalyst will feature a completely open world. While past games in the series have had some open-area elements, this would be the first time a Tomb Raider game has fully embraced an open-world design.
New Details on the New Tomb Raider Game
According to the source, the game world features a surprising variety of landscapes – snowy mountains, dense jungles, and vast deserts – all visible from different points. They emphasize that these aren’t separate areas, but rather part of one large, connected map with recognizable landmarks.
This fits with the trailer released last month, which suggested a vast open-world environment. It also supports Crystal Dynamics’ claim that this is the largest game in the series so far.
Look, I’ve been burned by Crystal Dynamics before, so I’m going into Tomb Raider: Catalyst with pretty low expectations, especially since they’re really trying to shake things up. Tomb Raider is still a big deal, and honestly, we haven’t had a new game in a while. Part of me thinks they should’ve just stuck to what works instead of taking such a big risk.
Okay, so I’m hearing that if the next Tomb Raider game goes full open-world like some others, it’s going to be a seriously big project – and expensive! That’s a little worrying considering Embracer Group, the company that owns the studio, has been shutting down other studios lately. Plus, Crystal Dynamics, the team making it, already took a big loss with Marvel’s Avengers a few years back. They really can’t afford another expensive game that doesn’t do well, you know?
Keep in mind that this information hasn’t been officially confirmed, so it’s best to view it as speculation for now. We’d love to hear your thoughts – feel free to share them in the comments or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum. Do you think Crystal Dynamics is making the right decision?
