The newest Tomb Raider game, Catalyst, revealed at The Game Awards 2025, marks a return to the series’ origins after the recent trilogy reimagined the story. According to game director Will Kerslake in an interview with GamesRadar, Catalyst will directly follow the events of the 2008 game, Tomb Raider: Underworld.
During the interview, Kerslake revealed that the new trilogy will connect to the story of Tomb Raider: Catalyst, essentially showing how Lara Croft became the adventurer we know. However, the main story of the trilogy takes place after the events of Tomb Raider: Underworld. He clarified, “Catalyst happens years before Underworld, and the reboot trilogy details Lara’s early adventures, so we’re seeing a Lara who’s already gained some experience.”
The developers haven’t pinpointed exactly when Tomb Raider: Catalyst fits in the series’ timeline, but it will probably follow Tomb Raider: Underworld fairly closely. They need to consider Lara Croft’s age, so a significant time jump isn’t likely. However, this game will be a fresh start for the series, meaning new players won’t need to be familiar with previous titles to enjoy it. It’s designed to be accessible, even if you’re new to Tomb Raider.
He explained that this game marks a fresh start for the Tomb Raider series. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the franchise, Tomb Raider: Catalyst is built to be a complete and enjoyable adventure for all players.
The latest installment in the Tomb Raider series, Catalyst, has been revealed with a new trailer showcasing Lara Croft. The game will take Lara on a fresh adventure set in Northern India. Following a legendary disaster, long-hidden secrets have emerged, stirring up powerful, unknown forces. This has attracted numerous treasure hunters to the area, including Lara Croft, all seeking valuable artifacts.
The upcoming game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, is confirmed to be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, and will be published by Amazon Game Studios. Developed using Unreal Engine 5 by Crystal Dynamics, Catalyst promises the largest world ever seen in a Tomb Raider game, rewarding players for exploration with many hidden tombs filled with challenging puzzles. Lara Croft will have a variety of tools at her disposal, including her iconic dual pistols and grappling hook, as well as new gadgets to help her on her adventures.
