A Full Reimagining of Lara Croft’s 1996 Debut

Legacy of Atlantis isn’t a continuation of previous games; it’s a complete remake of the very first Tomb Raider from 1996. Developed by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog with the Unreal Engine 5, it retells Lara Croft’s original adventure. The story has Lara traveling to Peru, Greece, Egypt, and a secret island in the Mediterranean, all in search of the fragments of an artifact called the Scion.

The new Tomb Raider game stays true to the series’ roots, offering the classic mix of exploring, climbing, solving puzzles, fighting, and finding ancient relics. Developers Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog are essentially rebuilding the original game with bigger levels, updated puzzles, fresh surprises, and modern controls, all brought to life with stunning graphics from Unreal Engine 5.

Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst are two separate games planned for 2027. Catalyst will continue the main Tomb Raider story, while Legacy of Atlantis is a fresh take on the very first game.

Lost Valley, Rebuilt Puzzles, and Expanded Environments

The official announcement of preorders explains exactly how the original game was remade.

The Lost Valley level in Peru has been updated with redesigned puzzles and more interconnected areas. This is a change from the original 1996 version, which featured separate, isolated rooms.

The traditional cog puzzle, originally from Peru, has been updated with a fresh design as part of a larger update to our puzzles.

Lara Croft gets around using her strength, quickness, and a grappling hook to climb, jump, and swing through levels. The grappling hook is a new feature that wasn’t in the original 1996 game.

The game will feature a variety of puzzles, including those involving water flow, light beams, pressure plates, and symbols. These puzzles will be found throughout the game’s different areas.

Enemies: wildlife, mercenaries, and mythological creatures are all confirmed as enemy types.

The PS5 version will include advanced features like DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. These features will enhance gameplay by providing physical sensations during movement and battles.
