The star for Amazon’s live-action adaptation of the popular video game franchise Tomb Raider has been cast, with production set to commence on the new series at a specified date.
Who is playing Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider TV show?
As per a recent Variety update, Sophie Turner from Game of Thrones is officially cast as Lara Croft for an upcoming series. Previously, discussions about her role had been ongoing, but not confirmed. Now, it’s official that she will portray the legendary character in this series, which has been in development at Amazon MGM since 2023.
Variety’s report notes that the series will begin production on January 19, 2026.
Turner is primarily recognized for her long-standing portrayal of Sansa Stark in the successful HBO series Game of Thrones. Beyond this popular role, she has appeared as Jean Grey in recent X-Men movies and more recently starred in the 2024 British crime drama titled Joan.
In my perspective, as of now, details regarding the forthcoming Tomb Raider series remain scarce. However, Amazon MGM’s Jennifer Salke has hinted at an “epic” experience with a “globetrotting” journey, which she mentioned would unfold in 2024.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge is responsible for creating, writing, and overseeing the new Tomb Raider television series. Variety’s article mentions that Chad Hodge has joined the project, taking on roles as both executive producer and co-showrunner, working alongside Waller-Bridge. Lastly, it’s been announced that Jonathan van Tulleken will be directing the series.
I’m thrilled to share that we have Sophie Turner playing the role of Lara, an amazing cast and creative team! Phoebe Waller-Bridge expressed in a statement. ‘It’s rare to work on such a big project with a character I’ve long admired.’ Everyone involved is equally passionate about Lara, just like she is – daring, funny, and fearless. So, gather your artifacts, because Croft is on her way!
