The recently announced Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a complete remake of the original Tomb Raider game, is making a change that some longtime fans may not like. Crystal Dynamics revealed this past week that they’re working on two Tomb Raider projects. Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled to release in 2026, and the next main game in the series, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, will follow in 2027. While fans who’ve been with Lara Croft since the beginning will be excited to see her return, Legacy of Atlantis will remove one feature that was present in the original game.
During a recent interview with GamesRadar, Crystal Dynamics was asked about making the original Tomb Raider easier in the upcoming Legacy of Atlantis expansion. The 1996 version of Tomb Raider was known for being very challenging, and its old-fashioned controls added to the difficulty. Will Kerslake, a developer at Crystal Dynamics, explained that they plan to update the game to better suit today’s players, which will likely involve reducing some of the most frustratingly difficult parts of the original Tomb Raider in Legacy of Atlantis.
According to Kerlaske, successfully updating a game involves adapting it to what modern players enjoy. Puzzles, combat, challenging movement, and thrilling action are all essential parts of the Tomb Raider experience. Players can expect to see classic elements like rolling boulders – the game will be full of the things they associate with Tomb Raider.
This Move Is the Right One for Tomb Raider
While some fans of the original Tomb Raider enjoy its challenging difficulty, Crystal Dynamics made a smart choice by making Legacy of Atlantis more accessible. The remake aims to appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers, and a lower difficulty level will help draw in a wider audience and introduce a new generation to the Tomb Raider series. Compared to the original 1996 game, Legacy of Atlantis is designed to be easier to pick up and play.
While we don’t have a specific release date yet, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is expected to launch sometime next year. When it does, it will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
