Tomb Raider TV series filming put on hold after Lara Croft star Sophie Turner injured

Production on Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s upcoming Tomb Raider series has temporarily stopped after Sophie Turner, who plays Lara Croft, sustained a minor injury just over two months into filming.

Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that Sophie Turner sustained a minor injury. Filming has been temporarily halted to give her time to rest and recover, and the studio hopes to restart production quickly.

According to the publication, the closure is predicted to last around two weeks. It’s currently unknown if Turner’s injury happened during filming or at another time and location.

The series, mainly filmed in the UK, features a stellar cast including Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, and John Heffernan, alongside Turner, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein.

Alicia Vikander expressed her excitement after being cast as Lara Croft, saying she’s incredibly honored to play such a beloved and iconic character, and she’s fully committed to the role.

It’s a challenge taking over from such talented actresses like Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, who both gave amazing performances as Lara Croft. But with Phoebe now leading the way, I’m confident we’re in great hands, and I’m excited for everyone to see what we’ve created.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is thrilled to reveal that Sophie Turner will star as Lara, joining a fantastic team of creatives. She shared that it’s a rare opportunity to work on a large-scale show featuring a character she’s admired since childhood.

This new series takes inspiration from the popular Tomb Raider video games, which first launched in 1996. While Tomb Raider has been turned into films and animated shows before, this marks the first time it’s being adapted as a live-action TV series.

As a critic, I’ve been following James Hibbs’ work at TopMob for a while now, and he really seems to have his finger on the pulse of everything happening in TV – from the big streaming shows to what’s airing on traditional channels. Before becoming a writer, he actually spent time in public relations, both at an agency and with Fremantle, the international production company. It’s interesting to see that background informing his insightful takes. He clearly has a solid foundation in storytelling, with degrees in both English and Theatre Studies, plus a journalism diploma to boot.
