But what really struck me towards the end was how much it focused on what Tommy would leave behind – his legacy. Creator Steven Knight really nailed the ending, in my opinion. Having Tommy fatally wounded in that final showdown with Beckett, but then having his son, Duke, be the one to finish the job… it was just a beautifully tragic and poetic way to wrap up Tommy’s story. It felt like the only fitting end for a character who was always so focused on family and control.
After the Peaky Blinders series concluded, The Immortal Man continues the story several years later, fulfilling the potential hinted at in season six. The final season revolved around Tommy Shelby’s conflict with his cousin Michael Gray for leadership of the gang. Though Tommy won, the movie’s touching ending wisely centers on him acknowledging the need for someone to take over and accepting that this chapter is truly closing.
Watching Tommy Shelby orchestrate his own death felt like him finally taking control of his story, truly leaving everything to his son, Duke. It wasn’t just the end of his journey, but the start of a new one for the whole Peaky Blinders world.
