Tonight’s WWE Raw: 6 Hits & 2 Misses (August 4)

WWE certainly didn’t disappoint during their two-night SummerSlam extravaganza, serving up some unexpected twists like Seth Rollins’ epic cash-in, a tearful defeat for CM Punk, and the return of Brock Lesnar. It was no small feat to follow that act, but Monday Night Raw rose to the occasion, even if it didn’t pack the same level of surprises as SummerSlam. Let’s dive into the highlights of the night and determine whether they were home runs or strikeouts. So, let’s kick off our analysis with the opening segment of the show.

Hit: The Knight Signal

At SummerSlam, Seth Rollins emerged alongside his unnamed group, triumphantly celebrating his unexpected Money in the Bank cash-in. Throughout his speech, he criticized the fans for not supporting him after WrestleMania. However, the tone changed when LA Knight made an appearance to confront Rollins, seemingly aiming to challenge Rollins’ dominance, though the interaction followed a familiar pattern where the champion disregards the challenger.

It’s good news that Adam Pearce refused to go along with it. He accused Rollins not just of deceiving the medical staff about his injury, but also of misleading fans. Later in the evening, Pearce officially set up the match and announced that the Title would be at stake, a move that shines a light on Knight, given their ongoing feud and the injury storyline that came into play later.

Hit: Finally Starting to Click

The recent encounters between Rusev and Sheamus have been strong, yet something about their ongoing conflict hasn’t quite felt right, considering it should have worked perfectly. Tonight’s third fight ended in a draw, but despite the lack of a clear winner, the feud has finally begun to gain momentum. Throughout the entire night, these two had an hilarious back and forth, even disrupting other segments unexpectedly, which is the kind of intensity and outrageous humor that will let this rivalry live up to its potential. Let’s see more of this entertaining action!

Hit: Bliss and Flair Continue Their Winning Ways

Recently, WWE surprised many when the freshly crowned WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions lost their titles just a night after winning them. This unexpected turn of events happened as Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez deposed Becky Lynch and Lyra Valkyria. It’s hard not to think that WWE might do something similar in the future, but fortunately, they didn’t with their latest Women’s Tag Team sensations.

As a movie critic, I’d rephrase it like this: At SummerSlam, I witnessed Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair claim the Women’s Tag Team Championship, defeating Roxanne Perez and Raquel Rodriguez. In a surprising turn of events, Perez and Rodriguez challenged them for a rematch, which was granted by Adam Pearce. These two teams showcase an impressive blend of skills, with Bliss and Flair excelling at crafting entertaining moments within each match. Their next feud remains to be seen, but given their past performances, they’re certain to continue dazzling the audience, no matter who their opponents may be.

Miss: Triple El Grande Americano

Initially, the character “El Grande Americano” was somewhat intriguing when only Chad Gable was involved, as it tied into his comedic pursuit of unraveling the secrets behind Mexican wrestling known as lucha libre. However, after an injury to Gable, the narrative took a slight turn, introducing a new character in the mask and attire – Ludwig Kaiser. While there were some entertaining aspects, it continued to feel like a story that wasn’t advancing or moving forward effectively.

Currently, in a battle between Dragon Lee and Dominik Mysterio, three distinct incarnations of El Grande Americano unexpectedly intervened, causing Lee to lose the match. At this juncture, I’m eager for some closure on this plotline so we can advance past it, as it appears rather aimless without Gable’s journey at its heart. The more characters we introduce, the less invested I become, and I’m almost ready to leave this story behind.

Hit: Becky Lynch The G.O.A.T.

Following her triumph at SummerSlam, Becky Lynch found herself seeking a fresh adversary, and she got one in none other than WWE veteran Nikki Bella. As Bella made her entrance, she delivered some harsh realities to Lynch, which Lynch was unwilling to accept passively. To set the record straight, Lynch’s powerful promo and subsequent replies during this segment were top-notch, but it was her searing remark about Nikki Bella’s personal past with John Cena that left the crowd in a frenzy.

Bella criticized Lynch for being as dishonest as her husband, Seth Rollins, which didn’t sit well with Lynch. Lynch then praised herself and Lynch as the best wrestling couple ever, to which Bella responded by bringing up her past relationship with John Cena, mentioning that they were a top couple but she couldn’t be with him anymore. The audience erupted, and although Lynch would later physically attack Bella with a surprise punch, her comment about the past relationship was the most impactful moment of the exchange.

Miss: LA Knight Can’t Catch a Break

The course of events favored Knight until Adam Pearce declared the Title match between him and Seth Rollins for the main event. This turned out to be even more advantageous when Pearce prohibited Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker from being present at ringside. The momentum continued, with Knight performing impressively against the World Heavyweight Champion, skillfully thwarting many of his moves, and preventing him from executing either the pedigree or the curb stomp.

The situation took a turn for the worse when CM Punk interfered in the match to retaliate against Rollins for his tragic cash-in at SummerSlam. Leaping over the barrier, Punk pummeled Rollins with rapid blows, ultimately leading to the match’s abrupt halt due to disqualification. This also dashed any chance of Knight claiming the Title from Rollins, but things went from bad to worse for him as Rollins’ crew attacked him, leaving him unconscious on the mat. Quite a tumultuous experience indeed for the megastar.

Hit: Rollins Runs Raw

Tonight marked a pivotal point in Rollins’ career, as the tumultuous conclusion of Raw underscored that each significant Raw superstar harbors issues with him. What’s more, it became evident that Rollins and his formidable team are up to the challenge of dealing with everyone who confronts them. Currently, Knight, CM Punk, and Roman Reigns all have personal motivations for taking aim at Rollins. However, by the end of the evening, Rollins, Breakker, Reed, and Heyman stood victorious, a scene that doesn’t appear to be changing any time soon.
