For years, Toonami has been a go-to destination for countless anime series, making it challenging to keep track. It’s where popular shows like Dragon Ball Z, Mobile Suit Gundam, Sailor Moon, and many others found a home among Western viewers, thanks to Cartoon Network’s platform. Today, Toonami continues to air fresh anime as part of Adult Swim. In an unexpected development, Toonami has disclosed that one of the most anticipated new anime series is set to debut on their programming block soon. Given that this anime is currently in its second season, it could be a perfect opportunity for you to get up to speed with Toonami’s offerings.
Prepare, Science SARU enthusiasts! The captivating series “Dandadan” is set to debut on Toonami, airing on July 26th at 12:30 AM Eastern time. This series, filled with supernatural and extraterrestrial exploits featuring Momo and Okarun, will be positioned between popular shonen shows like “Dragon Ball Daima” and “Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War”. As new episodes will be released weekly, it seems that only season one will air initially. However, with the second season currently streaming on Crunchyroll and Netflix, now is an excellent time to catch up if you haven’t yet. If you want to keep up with this anime sensation, Cartoon Network could be your go-to platform.
The Anime Wars Continue
In a recent conversation, Jason DeMarco, one of the minds behind Toonami, spoke about some hurdles that the programming block encounters currently. The main issue is that Cartoon Network needs to contend with streaming services nowadays. As per DeMarco’s remarks during his chat on the podcast Toonami Faithful, these modern giants provide more opportunities for original content creators compared to what Cartoon Network can offer.
In the current setup, Japanese copyright owners have significantly more control over how their intellectual properties are advertised, what can be done with them, which clips can be used, and how promotional materials are designed. This works well for streaming services like Crunchyroll since they don’t have a television network, meaning they don’t need to edit numerous small clips or approve every single one. They also don’t require “next episode promos.” However, for television networks like Toonami, with multiple promotional trailers and advertisements for anime, the process is different. It involves decisions made collectively by the anime industry and copyright holders, which can sometimes slow things down due to the need for their approval.
Currently, Toonami thrives as part of Adult Swim, but its journey wasn’t always smooth sailing. Previously, the action-filled programming block faced difficulties and even took a prolonged break before finding a new home. Here’s hoping that Toonami will continue to bring more anime to fans for many years ahead.
