Toonami’s Most Popular Mech Has Returned

Among numerous unique shows produced by Cartoon Network, it was Toonami’s original giant robot character that made an unprecedented impact on public awareness for the cable network. The action-packed programming block likely gained momentum due to its mech-themed anime shows. Broadcast during the early 2000s, this original anime series may have been limited to just two seasons, but its influence in cementing Toonami’s place in the spotlight is undeniable. In an unexpected turn of events, this anime series has made a comeback, catching many fans off guard.

For the first time, The Big O made its debut on Cartoon Network in 1999, produced by Sunrise – the same team behind Mobile Suit Gundam from Bandai Namco. If you’ve never watched this series, it transports us to a mysterious city where its residents are unaware of their civilization’s past. The main character, Roger Smith, resembles “anime Batman” most outside of the Caped Crusader’s own anime adaptations, with his giant mech, known as the Big O, being a notable feature. In the upcoming game Super Roboy Wars Y, both the mech and Smith will make an appearance, specifically as downloadable content. For more details, you can watch the trailer announcement.

Super Robot Big O

On August 28th this month, Super Robot Wars Y made its debut on consoles and PCs, introducing the franchise’s newest addition with a host of significant mechs from series such as The Big O, G Gundam, the original Gundam series, Code Geass, Gundam Wing, Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, and even Jet Jaguar from Godzilla. Regrettably, the DLC featuring Roger Smith and his mech does not have a set release date yet, but Bandai Namco has assured us that it will be available soon.

If you’re not acquainted with the “Super Robot Wars” series, it initially emerged in 1991 under the title “Super Robot Wars.” The game franchise follows a model similar to what we now call “gacha,” and over time, it has crafted an intriguing narrative where iconic anime robot pilots engage in fierce battles against each other. This unique crossover is unparalleled in the world of video games.

Regarding a potential new “Big O” anime series, this hasn’t been officially suggested yet. Originally, the anime ended controversially, with the story concluding prematurely, leaving fans unsatisfied about Roger Smith and his team. Fortunately, fan pressure led to a second season, providing a more conclusive ending. If the series returns, it might be either a reboot or a sequel that continues after the original’s events.
