As a movie fan, I’m getting really excited about the next few years! 2025 was already fantastic, but everything I’m seeing suggests 2026 is going to be absolutely massive for film. It looks like there’s going to be something great for everyone, no matter what kind of movies you love. I’m especially looking forward to the fantasy films coming out – they seem a little overlooked right now, but I think they’re going to be amazing!
2026 looks like a great year for fantasy movies! We can expect both big sequels in established franchises and fresh, new stories – including adaptations of popular books and completely original ideas. It’s shaping up to be an exciting time for fans of the genre.
Forgotten Island
Following the big success of Encanto in 2021, Disney Animation began making more sequels. While Strange World and Wish didn’t perform well due to marketing issues, Moana 2 and Zootopia 2 were huge successes in theaters.
I’m so excited! It looks like Disney has another guaranteed success with Frozen 3 planned for 2027. But even before that, they’re doing something completely new, which I love! Their next movie, Hexed, is going to be directed by some really talented people – Josie Trinidad, who’s an amazing storyboard artist, and Jason Hand, who worked on Moana 2. I can’t wait to see what they come up with!
I’m really looking forward to Hexed! All we know right now is it comes out November 25th, and the story sounds amazing: it’s about a teen who discovers he has magical abilities and gets whisked away to a magical world with his mom. Knowing who’s working on it, and Disney’s track record, I have a feeling this is going to be something special!
Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol

It’s easy to see why people might not get excited about another version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The story has been adapted countless times, from stage musicals and cartoons to the classic Muppet version.
The new film Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, coming out November 13th, seems worth watching. It’s directed by Ti West, who has consistently delivered strong work throughout his career. What makes this project especially interesting is that it’s a significant departure from his recent horror films – X, Pearl, and MaXXXine.
The new film, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, boasts a fantastic cast featuring Daisy Ridley, Rupert Grint, Sam Claflin, Tramell Tillman, Andrea Riseborough, and Ian McKellan, among others. It also marks Johnny Depp’s return to the movies. Considering director Will West’s previous work, this version of the classic story promises to be unique and engaging.
Wicker
A movie doesn’t always need a detailed plot to generate buzz. Often, a strong cast, a simple idea, and the film’s genre are enough to get people talking. That’s happening with Wicker, a new film based on the folk tale The Wicker Husband, which will debut at the Sundance Film Festival.
This heartwarming tale centers around a woman considered unattractive who asks a basket weaver to create her an ideal husband made of wicker. The story beautifully explores the meaning of true beauty and learning to love yourself.
Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, the team behind the 2020 film Save Yourselves!, wrote and directed this new adaptation. It stars a fantastic cast including Olivia Colman, Elizabeth Debicki, Alexander Skarsgård, and Peter Dinklage – a truly impressive group of actors.
The Magic Faraway Tree
When it comes to fantastic fantasy movies, animation is a great place to start. 2026 looks promising, with films like Hexed, DreamWorks’ Forgotten Island, and the British production The Magic Faraway Tree all on the horizon.
This movie is adapted from a well-loved book series and tells the story of a family who moves to the English countryside and tries to rebuild their relationships. They soon stumble upon a magical tree that transports them to incredible, fantastical worlds.
Based on early looks, The Magic Faraway Tree promises to be a visually stunning film. With a fantastic cast including Claire Foy, Andrew Garfield, and Rebecca Ferguson, it’s shaping up to be a delightful family movie, arriving on March 27th.
Practical Magic 2
Sequels that revisit stories from the past have had varying degrees of success. But lately, we’ve seen some really strong ones, like Top Gun: Maverick, 28 Years Later, and Twisters. Now, on September 18th, another unexpected sequel joins the list with Practical Magic 2.
The movie Practical Magic was first released in 1998 and tells the story of two sisters, both from a family of witches, who are trying to break an old family curse. This new movie is based on the 2021 novel The Book of Magic, just like the first film was based on a book. Viewers who enjoyed the original Practical Magic are sure to enjoy this one, as many of the original actors return.
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprise their roles as the sisters, with Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing also returning to the cast. The film also features strong performances from Joey King, Xolo Maridueña, Maisie Williams, and Lee Pace.
Jumanji Sequel
The Jumanji movies have become incredibly popular. The original 1996 film is a beloved classic, though the 2005 sequel isn’t as well-remembered. However, the 2017 and 2019 installments were both major box office successes.
The new movie comes out on December 11th and features the return of Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart as the main characters. Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, and other familiar faces will also be back.
Similar to the previous Jumanji films, the new movie will once again feature characters being pulled into the Jumanji video game world. Production began a few months ago, and Jake Kasdan is returning as director. Considering how enjoyable the last two movies were, fans have high hopes for this next installment.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Few movies, in any genre, are generating more excitement for 2026 than The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The first film, released in 2023, earned over $1 billion and has become a favorite for families to watch at home.
Fortunately, the new movie appears to be a great follow-up. The people making it are clearly passionate about the Super Mario games, and are approaching the project with a lot of care. The story will draw inspiration from the 2007 game, Super Mario Galaxy.
The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie will feature the original voice cast, including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key. Excitement is building with the addition of new cast members Brie Larson, who will voice Rosalina, and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew
C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia is a beloved and classic fantasy series. The books were made into popular movies between 2005 and 2010, and now Netflix is creating a new adaptation of the 1955 novel The Magician’s Nephew.
Although written later, The Magician’s Nephew functions as the first story in the series, showing how Narnia was originally created by Aslan the lion. Beyond the compelling story, the talented team bringing it to life is what makes this a must-see for fantasy enthusiasts.
Greta Gerwig, fresh off the success of Barbie, is set to direct The Magician’s Nephew. The film will star Emma Mackey as Jadis, the White Witch, Carey Mulligan as Mabel Kirke, and Daniel Craig, with a substantial $200 million budget backing the project, signaling Netflix’s strong belief in its potential.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping
The Hunger Games is a massive franchise in the fantasy genre. The first three books were incredibly popular, and the four movies based on them were huge hits. Although it seemed like the story had ended, the recent prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, has also proven to be very successful.
As a big fan of the Hunger Games world, I’m really excited about the new prequel movie, Sunrise on the Reaping! It’s based on the popular book and is coming out pretty quickly, which is awesome. This one takes us way back to the 50th Hunger Games, and it’s a coming-of-age story focusing on a young Haymitch Abernathy – showing us his life 24 years before Katniss ever volunteered.
The first look at ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ is amazing, and the actors they’ve chosen are perfect! Joseph Zada will play Haymitch, Jesse Plemons is a young Plutarch, and Elle Fanning will be a young Effie Trinket. These are just a few examples of the brilliant casting choices that make this movie feel truly exceptional.
The Odyssey
Whenever Christopher Nolan’s latest film comes out, it always generates a lot of excitement. This is particularly true following the massive success of his previous movie, Oppenheimer, which earned over $1 billion and won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Christopher Nolan is tackling a fantasy story for the first time, adapting Homer’s classic epic, The Odyssey. The film will follow the decades-long journey of the king of Ithaca as he tries to return home to his wife after the Trojan War. Given Nolan’s previous work, we can expect a truly grand and impressive movie.
Nolan has assembled another incredible cast for his latest film. Matt Damon will star as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway playing Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus. The film also features Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Jon Bernthal, and many other talented actors.
