Every year, a few actors give truly memorable performances that launch their careers. Often, this happens with a first-time movie role where they greatly exceed expectations, immediately becoming stars. This has been particularly common in movies over the last ten years, with actors quickly becoming well-known names.
Sometimes, an actor who’s consistently delivered strong performances in smaller roles finally gets a breakthrough opportunity and truly shines. This leads to major awards and recognition, turning them into a performer audiences eagerly anticipate seeing in future projects.
Sometimes, even an amazing performance doesn’t launch an actor’s career. They might be forgotten despite doing great work. However, that one standout role is still something to be celebrated and can make them well-known, even if just briefly.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen some incredible acting performances. This includes winners of major awards, impressive first-time roles, standout work in smaller, independent films, and actors who brilliantly overshadowed even established stars. Many of these performers have since become household names in Hollywood.
2016: Trevante Rhodes – Moonlight
For me, the standout performance of 2016 definitely came from Moonlight – it’s no surprise it won Best Picture! While Janelle Monáe was amazing in this and Hidden Figures, I think Trevante Rhodes really stole the show. He was incredible.
I was absolutely blown away by his performance as the grown-up Chiron – he completely owned every single scene. Honestly, I was shocked he didn’t get more recognition at the major award shows! Since Moonlight, he’s been great in things like Bird Box, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, and Mike, but I’m really hoping he gets another big leading role in a film soon – he deserves it.
2017: Daniel Kaluuya – Get Out
Similar to Moonlight, Get Out was the surprise hit of its release year. The film, a debut from its director, quickly became an awards season favorite, earning Daniel Kaluuya a Best Actor nomination at the Oscars. The movie centers around Chris, a Black man who finds himself in a frightening predicament after meeting his white girlfriend’s family.
Daniel Kaluuya previously worked mostly in smaller roles, but his outstanding performance in Get Out led to significant parts in films like Black Panther, Widows, Judas and the Black Messiah, and Nope, boosting his reputation. He rapidly became one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors, although he hasn’t appeared in many projects recently.
2018: Lady Gaga – A Star Is Born
Look, before A Star is Born, I thought of Lady Gaga as this incredible musician – a true artist. Her acting experience? Mostly that stint on American Horror Story. But wow, when everyone saw her as Ally, it became crystal clear: she’s just as gifted an actress as she is a singer. It wasn’t just a good performance, it was a revelation – she completely nailed it and proved she’s a force to be reckoned with on screen.
Lady Gaga delivers a strong vocal performance, but it’s her emotional depth and connection with Bradley Cooper that truly make this role memorable. While her subsequent films have received varied reactions, critics continue to commend her acting, particularly in House of Gucci.
2019: Florence Pugh – Midsommar
Florence Pugh had a fantastic 2019, with several films showcasing her talent. While she impressed audiences in both Fighting With My Family and earned an Oscar nomination for Little Women, it was her role in Midsommar that really put her on the map.
Florence Pugh delivers a stunning performance, capturing Dani’s journey through immense grief and an emotionally damaging relationship with incredible depth. By the film’s unsettling conclusion, you’re completely invested in her and desperately hoping for the best, all thanks to Pugh’s skill. Since then, she’s become a major star, appearing in blockbuster films like those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Dune: Part Two, and Oppenheimer.
2020: Sidney Flanagan – Never Rarely Sometimes Always
Sometimes a new actor appears in a film and completely captivates the audience with an incredible performance. That’s exactly what Sidney Flanagan does in Never Rarely Sometimes Always, a movie about a young woman who travels to New York with a friend to get an abortion.
Flanagan gives a truly powerful performance, particularly in a key scene where she’s faced with personal and uncomfortable questions before a medical procedure. The camera focuses entirely on her face, allowing the audience to witness her raw emotions unfold. It’s disappointing that she hasn’t received more significant roles since then – she deserves them.
2021: Ariana DeBose – West Side Story
Steven Spielberg’s film version of West Side Story received a lot of award nominations and wins. Rachel Zegler and Mike Faist both gave strong performances, but Ariana DeBose truly shined as Anita, especially considering she hadn’t done much film work before this role.
Before landing the role of Anita in Netflix’s The Prom, which earned her an Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA – making her the first openly queer woman of color to win an acting Academy Award – DeBose hadn’t had a major movie role. She later starred as the voice of the lead character in Disney’s Wish, but her films since winning the Oscar haven’t been well-received by audiences or critics.
2022: Amber Midthunder – Prey
Dan Trachtenberg successfully breathed new life into the Predator series with Prey. This film, a prequel set in the 1700s, follows Naru, a young Comanche warrior played by Amber Midthunder, as she challenges traditional roles to protect her community from a Predator.
Amber Midthunder’s performance is truly memorable, establishing her as a standout action hero in science fiction. She received a Critics’ Choice Award nomination and there was even talk of her reprising the role in the animated series Predator: Killer of Killers. Since then, she’s continued to build her career with roles in films like Dream Scenario and Novocaine, as well as the series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, among others.
2023: Charles Melton – May December
Charles Melton’s performance in May December was a standout, especially considering he acted alongside established stars Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore. Many believe he actually gave the strongest performance in the entire film, which is high praise.
He portrays Joe, the husband of Gracie, played by Moore. Their relationship began when he was 13 and she was 26, adding a layer of complexity to his role. The character is particularly challenged as he starts to examine their seemingly perfect marriage and grapple with the troubling origins of their connection. Melton received a Golden Globe nomination and also appeared in the 2025 film, Warfare.
2024: Mikey Madison – Anora
Okay, so everyone was buzzing about Ariana DeBose, and honestly, you can’t deny a performance that just sweeps the awards season. That’s exactly what Mikey Madison did in Anora. She plays the main character, a stripper who ends up marrying the really spoiled, young son of a super-rich Russian guy – and she absolutely kills it. It’s a breakout role, for sure.
Though Madison was previously known for smaller roles in films like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and the 2022 Scream, she quickly rose to stardom after winning both an Oscar and a BAFTA for Best Actress. After a relatively quiet 2025, she’s set to star in a major role in The Social Reckoning, the follow-up to The Social Network, in 2026.
2025: Chase Infiniti – One Battle After Another
Chase Infiniti recently impressed audiences in the limited series Presumed Innocent, but she first appeared on film in One Battle After Another, and has been gaining attention ever since. She truly stood out in the Best Picture-winning film, even alongside acclaimed actors like Teyana Taylor, Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, and Sean Penn.
The actress delivers a remarkably confident performance as Willa Ferguson. She’s captivating on screen, even alongside established stars, and appears as if she’s a seasoned veteran. With upcoming roles in The Testaments and The Julia Set, she’s clearly poised for a brilliant career.
