The future offers an unlimited array of scenarios, ranging from idyllic utopias to grim dystopias. Regardless of what lies ahead, it’s comforting to know that a new breed of protectors will be on hand to safeguard the vulnerable. Some of these guardians even journey back in time to encounter today’s superheroes, while others remain in the future. Publishers like DC and Marvel employ alternate realities and potential futures to weave captivating tales and introduce fresh, intriguing characters. These characters may be entirely unique or successors to a legacy, but they all carry on the tradition of heroism.
From DC to Marvel, these are the greatest superheroes of the future.
10) Cosmic Boy
As a passionate cinephile in the year 3000, I’ve got to say that there’s no denying the legendary status of the Legion of Superheroes across the cosmos. Among the original trio who established this stellar team, it was Rokk Krinn, also known as Cosmic Boy, who took on the mantle of leader. Hailing from the extraordinary Braalians, a race gifted with magnetic abilities, Cosmic Boy stands out as one of the mightiest heroes in our time.
Despite his occasional serious demeanor, he is undeniably a charismatic and inspiring leader, driven by an unwavering love for his fellow Legionnaires. His mastery over magnetism adds a unique flair to the team’s superpowers, making him not only an effective commander but also a captivating figure worthy of admiration in the 30th century.
9) Rip Hunter
As a fervent admirer, I’d say: In the realm of DC Comics, I stand in awe of Rip Hunter, the Time Master and protector of the timestream. Born in the 25th century, this extraordinary hero engineered the Time Sphere, a marvel that enables meanders through time with my comrades. Unlike other heroes, he doesn’t possess innate powers; instead, his arsenal includes advanced weaponry and gadgets to combat foes. His true identity, however, was shrouded in mystery until it was unveiled that Hunter is none other than the future offspring of the time-traveling legend, Booster Gold.
8) Iron Lad
In simpler terms, Nathaniel Richards was actually a younger version of the infamous 30th-century antagonist, Kang the Conqueror, who traveled back in time to evade his tragic end. He assumed the identity of Iron Lad and led the formation of the initial Young Avengers team. However, despite his valiant efforts to thwart destiny, he ultimately conceded that he would eventually transform into Kang for the sake of maintaining the timeline and safeguarding his companions. Since then, Nathan has served as both a hero and a villain, forever bound by his predetermined role.
7) Impulse
In simpler terms, Bart Allen, also known as Impulse, is the grandson of Barry Allen from the future. Much like his ancestor, Bart can harness the power of the Speed Force, making him one of the quickest characters in the DC Universe. He journeyed back through time to meet his role model grandfather. After settling into the past, Impulse had to master his headstrong and spontaneous personality traits. He eventually joined Young Justice as one of its original members, assuming the title Kid Flash. At times, he even temporarily took on the mantle of the Flash. Despite changing his name back to Impulse, Bart remains the courageous youngster who is eager to develop into a better hero, just like his grandfather.
6) Saturn Girl
Saturn Girl, an original member of the Legion of Superheroes, is a renowned hero hailing from planet Titan. Like her fellow Titans, she boasts formidable psychic powers, making her one of the most potent telepaths in the universe. Her warm and compassionate nature frequently earns her the title of the Legion’s soul. As one of the earliest prominent comic book telepaths, Saturn Girl paved the way for future heroes with similar abilities, such as Professor X and Jean Grey.
5) Bishop
In another reality, 80 years from now, Bishop was born under Sentinel rule, robots who ruled Earth. Being a mutant with the power to absorb and redirect energy, he played a crucial role in the resistance against these mechanical overlords. He later discovered a means to travel back to the past, where he joined forces with the X-Men to avert this grim future. Over time, Bishop has frequently moved between past and present, serving as an integral part of the X-Men in both eras.
4) Spider-Man 2099
Miguel O’Hara, in the future year of 2099, is a blend of Spider-Man and Batman, combining their unique traits. Initially, a scientist, he engineered a new Spider-Man due to circumstances that led him to attempt curing himself of a lethal addiction. The experiment went awry, granting him spider-like abilities alongside additional extraordinary powers. He boasts retractable claws, advanced vision, and the ability to produce organic web shooters from his wrists. Moreover, he has venomous fangs capable of injecting opponents with a paralyzing sedative. Despite his more serious demeanor, Miguel remains an unwavering hero.
3) Cable
As a follower and fan, I’d rephrase it like this: Born to Cyclops and Jean Grey, I was Nathan Summers, a child afflicted with a lethal techno-organic virus from birth. My parents, Scott and Jean, sent me 2,000 years into the future, praying that a remedy would be discovered in the intervening years. Regrettably, the era I landed in was a nightmarish dystopia ruled by Apocalypse. Raised amidst this post-apocalyptic wasteland, I evolved into the rebellious yet heroic figure known as Cable. With a cybernetic arm and eye augmenting my strength and senses, my mutant lineage bestowed upon me extraordinary telepathic and telekinetic abilities, placing me amongst the most powerful characters in Marvel Comics. Despite being born in the present, I became the future’s champion.
2) Booster Gold
Initially portrayed as a selfish and money-hungry character, Booster Gold – originally Michael Carter from the 25th century – was initially just a security guard who pilfered superhero gadgets and costumes from a museum to acquire superhuman abilities such as strength, flight, and an indestructible shield. Utilizing a time machine, he journeyed back in time to establish himself as a hero. However, his primary aim was fame and fortune, which earned him scorn within the superhero community. As events unfolded, Booster Gold evolved into a more selfless character, assuming the role of a timestream guardian, safeguarding past, present, and future.
1) Batman Beyond
In the coming times, when Bruce Wayne grew too old to guard Gotham as its protector, he handed over the role to a fresh, younger successor named Terry McGinnis. Following the demise of his father and uncovering the Batcave, Terry became Bruce’s apprentice. Instead of wearing the original mask, Terry was furnished with an advanced Batsuit that amplified his strength, speed, and granted him the power to fly using wings and rocket boots. As the new Batman, Terry must juggle his superhero duties with maintaining a regular life as a high school student. This dual existence makes Terry a more empathetic hero compared to his brooding predecessor. Equipped with his state-of-the-art suit, emotional maturity, and the greatest mentor imaginable, Terry has proven himself worthy of carrying on the Batman legacy.
