Pokémon is incredibly popular and successful, with games, a trading card game, and an anime series that have been around for almost 30 years. Because of this long history, many different types of Pokémon games have been created, beyond the main series. While some of these spin-off games have become beloved by fans, not all of them have been hits.
Games like the new *Legends: Z-A* don’t quite fit neatly into the main *Pokémon* series, nor are they traditional spin-offs. However, it’s usually easy to distinguish spin-off games from the core series. *Pokémon* has explored many different game types, including the upcoming *Pokopia* life simulation game. But, in my opinion, these five console spin-offs stand out as the best the franchise has ever offered, and here’s why.
5. Pokemon Rumble

While *Pokemon Rumble* is often considered the lowest-rated Nintendo franchise, it still ranks among the top 5 Pokemon spin-off games because of its potential. Nintendo tried several times to perfect the *Pokemon Rumble* formula, suggesting the core idea was strong. It likely served as an early basis for the popular free-to-play game *Pokemon Unite* on mobile and Switch.
Pokemon Rumble lets players battle as toy-like Pokemon in fast-paced, close-range combat. It was a unique game that introduced real-time battles and playing *as* Pokemon, ideas The Pokemon Company still explores today. Even though the game wasn’t critically well-received, many fans remember it fondly and would love to see a sequel.
4. Hey You, Pikachu

Critics and most players didn’t love this game, but it was a huge hit with kids who loved *Nintendogs*. *Hey You, Pikachu!* was innovative for its time, letting you interact with and control Pikachu using your voice. While the voice controls weren’t always reliable – which is why it got some negative reviews – I have fond memories of it as a kid who dreamed of owning a Pikachu, and I think it’s worth revisiting today.
Similar to *Pokemon Rumble*, this game is promising and exciting. It feels like a modern take on the *Hey You, Pikachu!* concept – think of it as a *Nintendogsstyle game featuring Pokemon, but with updated technology that actually allows Pikachu to respond to voice commands. While the original *Hey You, Pikachu!* wasn’t a complete success, it was enjoyable for younger players, and I’m hoping this new version will recapture that fun.
3. Pokemon Conquest

This new game is both a spin-off and a crossover, and it’s one of the most creative Pokémon games ever made. *Pokémon Conquest* combines the world of Pokémon with the strategy of the *Nobunaga’s Ambition* series, creating a one-of-a-kind tactical RPG experience. In the game, each Pokémon only knows one move, and you build relationships with Pokémon by playing a short, rhythm-based game.
Although unique for a Pokémon game, *Pokémon Conquest* was surprisingly well-received, particularly by fans of games like *Fire Emblem*. Unlike many other spin-off titles that received mixed or negative reviews, it earned a solid 80 on Metacritic upon release. *Pokémon Conquest* had the potential to launch a new style of Pokémon RPG, but unfortunately, it never got a sequel. Still, many players continue to hope for a follow-up, demonstrating the lasting impact this spin-off had on a generation of gamers.
2. Pokemon Stadium

Pokémon Stadium was known for its fun mini-games more than the battles themselves. The first game was special because it brought the original 151 Pokémon to life in 3D for the very first time. You could battle with Pokémon you’d trained in your Game Boy games, or create new teams and compete with friends.
Honestly, I don’t really recall much about the actual battles in this game, but I *still* think about the mini-games all the time – especially the ones in *Pokemon Stadium 2*. Seriously, from Lickitung’s crazy sushi slurping to those bug Pokemon trying their hand at lumberjacking, they were just a blast to play with friends. It’s a real bummer we haven’t seen anything like them in newer Pokemon games since *Pokemon Stadium 2*.
1. Pokemon Snap

Out of all the spin-off games, *Pokemon Snap* is the only one that’s gotten a recent sequel. *New Pokemon Snap* came out in 2021, and most of us fans thought it was a really good continuation of the original – definitely hit that nostalgic sweet spot! The whole idea is super simple: you travel around and try to snap the best photos of Pokemon in their natural habitats. But honestly, it’s way more engaging than it sounds, with tons of hidden stuff to discover if you create the right conditions.
The first *Pokemon Snap* was a truly innovative game, and it did a fantastic job despite the Nintendo 64’s limited graphics. Each new location offered the chance to discover different Pokemon, and the puzzle of capturing the perfect photo was surprisingly enjoyable. Though the concept might not sound exciting, *Pokemon Snap* proved to be a really fun and satisfying game. It’s still one of the most original and captivating Pokemon spin-offs, which is probably why a new version, *New Pokemon Snap*, was released in 2021.
As a huge Pokémon fan, I’m always curious what everyone’s favorite spin-off game is! Are you into Pokémon Stadium, Mystery Dungeon, Ranger, or something else? Let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum – come share your pick!
