The third installment of “Top Gun,” titled “Top Gun 3,” is being developed at this point, but its production isn’t assured yet. In an interview with GQ while promoting his latest film “F1: The Movie,” director Joseph Kosinski of “Top Gun: Maverick” spoke about the progress of the storyline for “Top Gun 3.” He also mentioned one essential condition for the sequel to materialize. At this initial stage, Kosinski and his co-writers (including Ehren Kruger) have sketched a plot where Tom Cruise’s character, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, grapples with an “existential crisis.” Although it seems promising, Kosinski stated that he won’t proceed unless the storyline is robust enough.
Indeed, there’s still a lot more of [Maverick]’s tale left to share, as Kosinski mentioned, “There’s one final adventure ahead.” Currently, we’re in the process of creating this story. Ehren Kruger, who penned the script for F1, is responsible for writing this new script. As with any project, it requires time to iron out the details, and we’ll only proceed if we believe we have a compelling enough narrative.
Following the remarkable box office success of 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick” (earning $1.4 billion globally and receiving a Best Picture nomination), Paramount promptly revealed plans for “Top Gun 3”. News about “Top Gun 3” initially surfaced in January 2024, but progress seems to have been more gradual. Part of this delay may be due to Tom Cruise’s schedule, as the actor has been occupied with “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”. Additionally, Cruise is set to star in a new film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, which is scheduled for release next year.
So far, since the announcement of Top Gun 3, the main developments have only revealed that the script is being worked on. Christopher McQuarrie has hinted at a solved narrative, while Tom Cruise has mentioned that Top Gun 3 is among several films he’s currently developing. Cruise hasn’t given any firm details yet, just sharing that discussions about Top Gun 3 are ongoing. As of now, there’s no announced release date for the movie.
Clearly, there’s a financial incentive for everyone involved in making Top Gun 3, given the success of Maverick and Paramount’s interest in another installment with Mission: Impossible potentially ending. However, it’s reassuring to hear Kosinski mention that the story will determine if the film gets made, as having an interest and creating a compelling narrative are two different things. After all, Maverick turned out to be a significant cinematic event (often credited for revitalizing movie theaters post-COVID-19 pandemic), so it would be disappointing if Top Gun 3 didn’t meet high expectations. With Kosinski directing, we can expect thrilling action scenes, but we also need to care about what unfolds on screen.
As a fervent fan, I find the concept of crafting an existential turmoil for Maverick in the upcoming Top Gun 3 intriguing and thought-provoking. One of the standout aspects of Top Gun: Maverick was the emotional journey as Pete (Maverick) mentored a new crop of aviators and revisited his strained bond with Rooster, the son of his late friend Goose. Kosinski didn’t delve deeper into what this existential crisis might entail, but it seems like an engaging source of conflict that could push Maverick to his utmost limits.
Much like John Wick 5, Kosinski and team should only proceed with Top Gun 3 if they are absolutely certain about the storyline. It would arguably be more beneficial to preserve the series’ integrity than to force a narrative that doesn’t resonate effectively.
