In the real world, “Bluey” was the most-streamed television show of the year 2024, outranking a variety of other series such as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Family Guy”. According to Nielsen, this Australian children’s series was watched for a total of 55.62 billion minutes across all 154 episodes on Disney+ between January 1st and December 29th, 2024. The ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” came in second place with its 439-episode run accumulating a total of 47.85 billion minutes of viewing time across Hulu and Netflix.
As a discerning movie critic, I must share some intriguing viewing statistics that have recently come to light. Two captivating animated series from Disney-owned 20th Television Animation – “Family Guy” (with an impressive 435 episodes) and “Bob’s Burgers” (boasting 280 episodes) – have held viewers spellbound for a collective total of approximately 79.24 billion minutes on Hulu alone!
In a close race, “Family Guy” clocked in at 42.44 billion minutes, while “Bob’s Burgers” followed closely behind with 36.80 billion minutes. However, when it comes to the grand finale, CBS’ “NCIS” (with an astounding 477 episodes) takes the cake, having been viewed for a staggering 35.91 billion minutes across Hulu, Netflix, and Paramount+. Quite remarkable, wouldn’t you agree?
141 episodes of the CBS sitcom “Young Sheldon” and 281 episodes of “The Big Bang Theory” rank as the 6th and 7th most-watched series, respectively, with a total of 35.91 billion minutes watched on Max, Netflix, and Paramount+ for “Young Sheldon” and 29.12 billion minutes for “The Big Bang Theory” due to its exclusive availability on Max. NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU,” with a massive 561 episodes, ranks at No. 8 with 28.72 billion minutes watched across Hulu and Peacock. Following closely behind is “Criminal Minds” (349 episodes) with 28.40 billion minutes on Hulu and Peacock. At No. 10, we find the classic Nickelodeon cartoon “SpongeBob SquarePants” (292 episodes) with 27.87 billion minutes watched on Paramount+.
2024’s final streaming week had me utterly captivated, with “Squid Game” seasons taking the lead! The K-drama sensation racked up an impressive 4.96 billion minutes watched over just four days. Incredibly, “Squid Game 2” debuted on December 26 and claimed the top spot in all 93 countries where Netflix is accessible, making it the first series to do so!
In second place on the overall top 10 chart was “Virgin River,” which added another 2.25 billion minutes viewed between December 23-December 29, 2024. The drama has truly left its mark!
In simple terms, the action-comedy movie titled Red One, featuring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, was the sole live-action film and the only one released in 2024 to make it onto the Nielsen top 10 streaming movies of the year. During the last week of 2024, this movie accounted for approximately 22.6% (or 1.81 billion minutes) of the total streaming time (which was 8.28 billion minutes).
Two additional Netflix original movies are worth noting: “Carry-On,” starring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman, a thriller that garnered the fourth spot with 1.53 billion viewing minutes, and Tyler Perry’s World War II drama, “The Six Triple Eight,” which claimed the fifth position with 1.33 billion minutes watched. Interestingly, “Bluey” is the only program to appear on both lists, holding the sixth position with an additional 1.17 billion minutes viewed on Disney+.
The original Paramount+ series “Landman,” featuring Billy Bob Thornton and created by Taylor Sheridan from “Yellowstone,” has garnered over a billion minutes of viewing time in its first eight episodes, placing it seventh among all shows. The reboot of “The Equalizer” starring Queen Latifah, with 63 episodes, clocks in at eighth place with 1.04 billion minutes watched on Paramount+ and Netflix combined. The original 1990’s film “Home Alone” ranks ninth with 917 million minutes viewed on Disney+, while Will Ferrell’s “Elf” accumulated an additional 848 million minutes on Hulu and Max during the holiday season.
Based on Nielsen’s comprehensive analysis of overall TV viewership across media companies, The Walt Disney Company led the way in December 2024 with a 11.2% market share. Google’s YouTube came in second at 11.1%, closely followed by Paramount+ (9.2%) and Netflix (8.5%). NBCUniversal, which owns Peacock, held 8.2%, while FOX took 7.1%. The combined entities of Warner Bros. Discovery, operators of Max and Discovery+, claimed a 6.0% share. Rounding out the top ten are Amazon with 4%, The Roku Channel at 2%, Scripps and Hallmark both with 2%, Weigel Broadcasting at 1.3%, A+E Network with 1.1%, and AMC Networks bringing up the rear with 0.9%.
Last year, the animated series “Bluey,” produced by ABC Kids and BBC Studios Kids & Family, premiered its first extended episode titled “The Sign” on Disney+, Disney Junior, and Disney Channel. Currently, you can stream this series on Disney+, Disney Junior, and Disney Channel (excluding Australia, China, and New Zealand), thanks to a global broadcasting agreement between Disney Branded Television and BBC Studios Kids & Family. In the U.S., “Bluey” has become the most-watched series across all demographics and the top series for preschoolers and children in total viewership.
Disney has recently revealed plans for a first-ever animated Bluey feature film, penned and helmed by creator Joe Brumm, set to premiere on Disney+ after a cinema release in the year 2027. Furthermore, starting from January 2025, the Heeler family (Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, and Chilli) will make their way into various Disney experiences within its theme parks and cruise lines.
