The combination of Warhammer and Total War is a natural fit, much like peanut butter and jelly. They consistently work well together, and it looks like that will continue, as Creative Assembly has just announced the next installment in the Total War series.
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 brings the popular strategy series to the Warhammer 40,000 universe, depicting a dark and expansive galactic war where humanity fights to defend its failing empire.
While details are scarce right now we do have a first look at gameplay and some new additions to the franchise. Here is what we know so far:
Total War: Warhammer 40k release date speculation
Currently, there’s no official release date for Total War: Warhammer 40k, but it’s likely to come out in late 2026 or 2027. The game is planned for PC and will also be the first Total War title available on consoles – PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It’s uncertain whether the PC and console versions will be released at the same time.
We’ll share more about the game in 2026, so keep checking back for updates. We’ll add new information to this guide as Creative Assembly releases it.

Total War: Warhammer 40k what to expect
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 takes place in the dark and brutal universe of Warhammer 40K. You’ll lead a military campaign, conquering planets, taking control of enemy ships, and building up your economy as you strive for galactic domination.
In this game, you command one of four famous factions – the Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks, and Aeldari – and each faction plays very differently.
No matter which side you choose, the game’s campaigns and battles feature environments you can destroy, a wide range of landscapes, and powerful units and vehicles. These all offer unique abilities to help you gain an advantage in combat.
A really cool feature for dedicated Total War players is the deep level of customization coming to Total War: Warhammer 40K. For the first time in the series, you’ll be able to completely tailor your faction – including its name, symbols, colors, and unique equipment – to define how it plays, fights, and looks.

Game Director, Attila Mohacsi has the following to say after the game’s announcement:
Warhammer 40,000 is a truly unique science-fantasy universe. Its massive scope, memorable groups, and intense conflicts fit perfectly with the style of Total War games. We’ve been working closely with Games Workshop for over 15 years, and we’re excited to continue that collaboration to create the ultimate Warhammer 40,000 strategy game, just as we did with the Total War: Warhammer series.
We expect to have more information in 2026, so check back for updates in the coming months.
