Toyota, a prominent Japanese automaker, intends to unveil Woven City this year – an innovative urban community and testing ground for future technologies, nestled at the foot of Mount Fuji, one of Japan’s most recognized landmarks.
Toyota intends to relocate the first 100 residents, mainly its employees and their families, into an experimental town by autumn 2025, with plans to grow this community to approximately 2,000 people in the early stages of the project, as stated on January 6.
As a researcher involved in the project, I am excited to share that this year marks the beginning of residents moving into our innovative city, the Woven City, as we gradually breathe life into it. Our goal is to expedite the process by which novel technologies can be tested and refined at the Woven City.
Five years ago, Toyota unveiled its concept for what they called a “living lab,” which is envisioned as an entirely sustainable urban area serving as a tangible demonstration of the practical applications of artificial intelligence, cutting-edge robotics, autonomous vehicles, and intelligent homes.
Yet, as reported by Bloomberg, Woven City is not planned to be accessible to the general public for a minimum of two years, and there’s a possibility that it might not become profitable.
“Will this Woven City make Toyota any money? Well, maybe not. As global citizens, I believe Toyota has a responsibility to invest in our collective future.”
In response to Toyoda’s remarks, Woven’s CEO, Hajime Kumabe, expressed his desire for the project to achieve profitability. However, he also noted that it could be challenging to measure this success due to the groundbreaking innovations being integrated into Toyota’s vehicle manufacturing process, which may make them indistinguishable from standard production.
In response to questions about the cost, Woven’s CFO, Kenta Kon, didn’t give a precise figure but instead described it as a substantial investment. It’s worth noting that the first phase of the city’s construction was finished in October 2024.
An essential component of the company’s comprehensive Woven projects is a fresh software platform and automobile operating system they refer to as Arene.
This new software is engineered to expedite automobile production, reduce expenses, and Toyota intends to implement it this year as a fundamental element. From 2026 onwards, it will serve as the backbone of its upcoming lineup of electric vehicles.
