Trails in the Sky FC might appear deceptively simple due to its modest visual style and basic combat, but it’s actually quite an extensive journey. The main story can last up to 40 hours, not including any optional content. Surprisingly, the remake, known as Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, seems to be even more comprehensive than completionist runs, suggesting a larger scope for players to explore.
According to a report from The Gamer (translated by Automaton-Media), studio CEO Toshihiro Kondo shared that their lead programmer finished the project in approximately 80 hours. The increased gameplay duration, nearly double, can be attributed to expanded map exploration and extra voiceovers.
In the new version of the game, there’s significantly more focus on map exploration compared to previous ones. We discovered that delving into those unexplored regions, paying attention to voice-overs, and completing every quest can almost double your playtime compared to the original. This extended duration might be due to the increased time spent witnessing events. In the past, we often rushed through text as it appeared, which gave the original game a somewhat brisk pace.
The new game offers more to explore and it takes longer to finish because you spend more time watching things happen. Back then, we used to quickly read through the text, but that made the old game feel fast-paced.
In this updated version, there’s a significant expansion in the conversations between Estelle and Joshua, as they play a crucial role in the main narrative. For instance, you’ll notice an abundance of intricate dialogue when they travel together and pass through checkpoints. Additionally, there are some casual chats during battles, adding depth to their interactions that was not present in earlier games. As a result, this installment features the most voice lines seen across the series thus far.
Falcon has integrated quick-travel and high-speed navigation options to significantly reduce travel time across the game world, akin to enhanced editions of its original version. The first installment of Trails in the Sky, set to release on September 19th for PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch, brings an updated opening cutscene, now redesigned in stunning 3D visuals. Witness it here.
