The first chapter of Trail in the Sky appears to be an impressive reboot, given our current observations – however, fans expecting a direct replication of the PSP and PC original might encounter some unexpected differences.
According to a recent interview with Japanese media source Gamer, as detailed by RPG Site, Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo hints that the first chapter could potentially be twice as long as its initial version.
2004’s “Trails in the Sky” game is typically completed within around 40 hours by most players, making it one of the shorter games in the extended “Trails” series. More recent entries such as “Trails from Zero” can easily consume over 90 hours of your time.
During our team meeting with the programmers, the lead programmer shared that they required approximately 80 hours to complete the first chapter of Trails in the Sky. This is according to Kondo’s account.
He points out that there was a significant amount of material related to exploration scattered throughout the map, possibly contributing to the extended playtime.
In simpler terms, it’s no surprise that the first chapter is longer than the original game, given it’s a full 3D remake, which naturally allows for an expanded gameplay experience. As Kondo suggests, exploring three-dimensional environments offers more complexity, and not to mention, many cutscenes are now fully animated.
However, considering a leisurely pace, this could potentially amount to an additional substantial commitment of about 80 hours – posing as yet another potential time-consuming endeavor for dedicated role-playing game enthusiasts.
If you thoroughly explore everything, carefully heed the voices during the events, and complete all the quests, it will likely double the duration of your gameplay compared to the initial version. Keep in mind that the time invested in watching these events could be substantial.
What are your thoughts on this? Was the extended length of the first chapter a surprise to you, given it is considerably longer than Trails in the Sky’s original version, or was this something you were anticipating? If this new length requires additional time for reading, feel free to take an extra week off work by commenting below.
