Falcom — or Nihon Falcom, to give the studio its full name — is officially 45 years old. Forty-five!
It’s rare for a game developer to consistently release new titles for so many years, but Falcom has done just that. They’ve built a strong reputation over decades with regular releases and popular series like Trails and Ys.
Some people might say Falcom hasn’t always tried to do too much, and that’s actually been a key to their success. They’ve consistently kept costs down and maintained a small team, only growing when absolutely needed.
Recently, the studio has become more well-known internationally. This is largely due to the growing popularity of the Trails series in Western countries, which has enabled them to expand and announce new games, such as the action RPG Kyoto Xanadu.
As a huge Falcom fan, I was so excited to hear they’re working on a brand new Dragon Slayer game! They just announced it as part of their 45th anniversary, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with.
I’ve been a Falcom fan for years, and it’s amazing to think about how it all started with Dragon Slayer! Released way back in the 80s, it wasn’t just a good RPG for its time – it pretty much created the style of Japanese RPGs we know and love today. Seriously, everything Falcom has done since then feels like it builds on what they first created with that game.
Many of the games originally created as spin-offs of Dragon Slayer have grown into popular franchises. For instance, Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes developed into the ‘Trails’ series – often referred to simply as ‘Trails’ by fans.
It’s hard not to be curious about Falcom’s new Dragon Slayer project, especially since they seem to be drawing heavily from their older work.
This thing’s coming to “consoles” — but that’s all we know for now.
If you enjoy games by Falcom, what are your thoughts on the recent Dragon Slayer updates? Feel free to leave a happy anniversary message for the developers in the comments!
