Trainwreck: PI Moms – who are the mothers and where are they now?

Another addition to Netflix’s expanding collection of Trainwreck documentaries is the PI Moms series, which delves into a team of mothers who have taken up the role of private investigators.

In 2010, Lifetime produced a reality show centered around a private investigation firm, with high expectations that it would be a major success. However, the project quickly unraveled.

Among the nine documentaries available on Netflix under the Trainwreck label, this one now shares the platform with two others – ‘Balloon Boy’ and ‘The Real Project X’, which were earlier releases.

So, who exactly were the PI Moms and the man behind it all?

Who were the PI Moms?

The PI Moms represented a unique team of individuals, initially soccer moms, who were selected and educated to function as private investigators within the firm, Butler & Associates.

Previously mentioned were Michelle Allen, Charmagne Peters, Denise Antoon, and Ami Wiltz, each of whom was hand-picked by ex-police officer Chris Butler due to his conviction that they possessed distinctive skills suitable for the task at hand.

On joining the group, Wiltz shared, “As a mother, I have the knack for handling multiple tasks simultaneously. Plus, being curious by nature, I’m always eager to know what my children are up to.

They gained popularity following their appearance on the Dr. Phil talk show, and were slated to star in a reality series titled “PI Moms,” where women detectives would confront unfaithful spouses directly.

Who is Chris Butler?

Chris Butler is a former police officer turned private investigator.

As a former officer, I ventured into the world of private investigation, establishing the once-thriving firm, Butler & Associates. I invited a team of remarkable women, or rather mothers, to be part of this journey with me.

Butler mentioned that he chose to include four mothers in his agency because they are already well-equipped for the tasks at hand due to their experience. Furthermore, they are excellent listeners and seem particularly adept at detecting dishonesty.

He said that he had trained the ladies in self-defence, investigative techniques and even firearms.

However, the situation took a turn for the worse when Butler was apprehended for several serious offenses. It was alleged that he, in conjunction with ex-law enforcement officer Norman Wielsch, were involved in the theft of crystal methamphetamine, anabolic steroids, and marijuana that had been seized by the police.

Where is Chris Butler now?

In 2012, Butler admitted to seven federal offenses, among which were robbery, extortion, and conspiracy.

It was decided that he would spend eight years behind bars, with a reduction in his sentence due to his assistance to law enforcement and a fine of $20,000. This means he became eligible for release in the year 2020. However, as of 2025, there’s no publicly available information about where Butler is located now.

Where are the PI Moms now?

After the controversy, the women – who had no part in any illegal activities – retreated from public view and resumed their private lives, several of whom were showcased in the Netflix documentary.
