If you haven’t been following the Energon Universe, you’re in for a treat! This franchise has revitalized both Transformers and G.I. Joe. For the past two years, Skybound Entertainment at Image Comics has been captivating longtime fans and newcomers alike with its bold and expansive universe. By blending classic Hasbro characters with fresh, original ideas, the Energon Universe has become something truly special. And in just a few years, this shared world has quickly become a major force in pop culture.
The Energon Universe has already gained a following through its comic books, and now a new animated series for adults is in the works, bringing even more attention to this franchise. While longtime fans are thrilled, others might be wondering: What exactly is the Energon Universe, what makes it so appealing, and can you still jump in and learn about it before the show premieres?
The Energon Universe Pushed Transformers and G.I. Joe to New Heights

The Energon Universe is interesting because it came as a complete surprise. In 2023, Image Comics launched Void Rivals, a new series intended to be the foundation for a shared comic book universe. And it delivered! The story’s main characters, Darak and Solila, discover and power on Autobot Jetfire, setting off a series of events that continued in a subsequent Transformers comic. Soon after, Image announced that the Energon Universe wouldn’t just include Void Rivals, but also comics featuring other Hasbro franchises like Transformers and G.I. Joe.
The concept of connecting Hasbro’s various franchises in a shared comic book universe isn’t entirely new—IDW Publishing tried something similar with their Hasbro Reconstruction initiative. However, the Energon Universe was designed to be more cohesive from the beginning, with a continuous, shared history woven throughout all the comics. Each series offers pieces of a larger story. For instance, Energon, the vital substance that powers Transformers, also plays a key role in the adventures of the characters in Void Rivals, serving a similar function.
Even though all the comics share the same universe, they’re easy to jump into for new readers. Characters from different series sometimes appear – for example, Pythona from Cobra Commander shows up in Void Rivals, and Duke meets Starscream from the Decepticons in his own comic. So far, the Energon Universe has focused on establishing its own stories and overall mythology, without big crossover events. However, each comic offers enough interesting content to encourage readers to explore the entire franchise.
Now is the Time to Get Onboard with the Energon Universe

As a huge fan, I’m so excited to hear they’re starting work on an animated show based on the Energon Universe! It’s going to be a wait though – good animation takes time, as anyone who followed Invincible knows. Luckily, that gives us plenty of time to dive into all the comics beforehand. And there’s a lot to catch up on! With ongoing series like Void Rivals and limited runs like Destro and Scarlett, the Energon Universe already has almost a hundred issues published – it’s a deep world, and I can’t wait to see it come to life!
Despite its new direction, the Energon Universe is a worthwhile experience. It’s grown into something special, offering exciting action, beautiful artwork, and compelling characters. What really sets it apart, though, is its consistent focus on meaningful themes like the hardships of war, the strength of family and friendship, and the courage to fight for what you believe in. Even with all the changes, it still captures the spirit of classic Hasbro stories.
I’m really excited about the upcoming Energon Universe animated series! While the individual comics have been great, I’m eager to see how everything comes together in a show. And the comics themselves give you a good preview of what to expect. If you’re at all interested in the buzz around this universe, I highly recommend trying out just one of the titles. Whether you’re already a fan of Transformers or G.I. Joe, I think you’ll really enjoy the whole Energon Universe.
