Fans can look forward to a new animated series that combines the worlds of Transformers and G.I. Joe! This crossover was hinted at in the 2023 film Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Both Transformers and G.I. Joe are long-running, popular franchises from Hasbro, known for their toys, cartoons, and movies.
According to Deadline, Hasbro and Skybound Entertainment are teaming up to create an animated series called Energon Universe. The show, based on a comic book by Robert Kirkman of Skybound, will combine the worlds of Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals.
Published in 2023, Void Rivals is a comic book that launched the Energon Universe. It centers on Darak and Solila, characters from warring alien races who are unexpectedly thrown together. The series was created by Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici after Kirkman obtained the rights to publish comics based on Hasbro’s Transformers and G.I. Joe properties.
Joe Henderson, who ran the show Lucifer, is now in charge of the new Energon Universe series. Producers are currently looking for networks or streaming services to buy the rights to the show, which Deadline reports will be geared towards adults, much like Kirkman’s animated series Invincible on Prime Video.
This crossover project is the most developed one since the hint at the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. However, it’s still unclear if the Energon Universe will be the only future collaboration between these two franchises.
A live-action movie combining these franchises has been in the works for a while, but it doesn’t seem to be moving forward right now. Anthony Ramos, who starred in Rise of the Beasts, recently told ScreenRant that Paramount has a lot on its plate, hinting that the merger with Skydance may be causing delays or complications.
I’ve been a fan of the Transformers movies since the very first one in 2007 – Paramount was right there from the start, both helping to make it and getting it out to audiences! And it’s amazing to me that they’re still working on new Transformers projects – there are actually a bunch of different ones being developed right now, at various stages of production. It’s exciting to think about what they’ll come up with next!
The upcoming plans also include a live-action movie directed by Josh Cooley, who recently directed the animated film Transformers One. Additionally, a sequel to Rise of the Beasts is in development, and it could incorporate characters from the G.I. Joe franchise, potentially leading to a future crossover movie.
Paramount is juggling a lot of projects, and they might temporarily halt work on the live-action Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover. They want to wait and see how the new Energon Universe performs first, to make sure there’s enough interest in this kind of team-up before continuing.
