Enthusiasts of the animated Transformers film are eagerly anticipating another encounter between Optimus Prime and Megatron, recalling fondly the iconic 1986 movie that holds a cherished place in the hearts of Transformers fans. This classic film not only brought beloved characters to life on the silver screen, but it also carried significant weight, as some fan-favorite characters met their end in fierce battles. The most poignant example was Optimus Prime, the Autobot leader, who sacrificed himself during the fight. This emotional scene left a lasting impact on fans and remains etched in their memories. It seems fitting that this new chapter in Transformers storytelling is revisiting this iconic showdown.
Image Comics and Skybound unveiled the initial glimpses of cover art and interior pages for Transformers #24, penned by Daniel Warren Johnson (Extremity, Do a Powerbomb), illustrated by Jorge Corona (Middlewest), colored by Mike Spicer (Stillwater, Murder Falcon), and lettered by Rus Wooton (G.I. JOE). Transformers #24 signifies the conclusion of Daniel Warren Johnson’s tenure on the series, preceding the arrival of a new creative duo consisting of Robert Kirkman (Invincible, Void Rivals) and Dan Mora (Superman, Justice League Unlimited), who will team up with Spicer and Wooton.
Optimus Prime vs Megatron Is the Fight Transformers Fans Have Been Waiting For
In the initial segment of “The Transformers: The Movie”, there was a fierce confrontation between Optimus Prime and Megatron. Although Optimus emerged victorious, this victory came at a steep price. The depiction of Optimus Prime’s demise (or any Transformer’s for that matter) was unprecedented in the original animated series. This dramatic event had such a profound effect on the fanbase that when “G.I. Joe: The Movie” was released a year later, they altered Duke’s death scene to portray him as being in a coma instead.
In simpler terms, the comic book series Transformers is advertising issue #24 as marking the end of a chapter and the start of a new one. The title reads, “END OF ARC. END OF AN ERA,” implying that it’s Daniel Warren Johnson’s final issue, signaling the culmination of a story arc. The description promises a highly anticipated clash between Optimus Prime and Megatron, a battle that has been building since the beginning. It teases that this could be one of the most surprising comic book endings of the year, and it sets up the commencement of a fresh era for Transformers.
The Transformers series, belonging to Skybound and Hasbro’s Energon Universe, made its debut about two years ago. Its first issue shattered records, becoming Skybound’s biggest selling debut and outperforming all previous Transformers sales. This issue was so popular that it sold out at the distributor level even before reaching comic shops, prompting multiple reprints to meet the extraordinary demand. It eventually became the top-selling comic book of 2023. Daniel Warren Johnson won both Best Continuing Series and Best Writer/Artist at the 2024 Eisner Awards. Starting from Issue #7, Jorge Corona joined him as the series artist.
