Tron: Ares Box Office Hits 2 Major Milestones In One Weekend, Still Can’t Keep Up With Huge Budget

The new movie Tron: Ares has reached two important box office goals during its third weekend in cinemas. Ares, which came out on October 10th, is the third film in the popular Tron series, which first began in 1982. Although Jeff Bridges is the only original cast member in a significant role, the film features a well-known cast including Jared Leto, Evan Peters, and Greta Lee.

According to Variety, Tron: Ares is projected to reach a worldwide box office total of $123 million by the end of its third weekend in theaters. Of that amount, $63 million comes from North American ticket sales, while $60 million is from international markets.

With an expected domestic box office total of $4.7 million by Sunday, Tron: Ares is projected to surpass both $60 million domestically and $120 million worldwide around the same time this weekend (October 24).

With its recent success, Tron: Ares is now the 27th film released this year to earn over $60 million in North American theaters. It has surpassed the box office totals of several other well-known movies, including The Naked Gun, Ballerina, Karate Kid: Legends, and Paddington in Peru.

This is the 28th film released this year to earn over $120 million globally, surpassing the box office totals of movies like The Accountant 2, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, and The Amateur.

Despite its earnings, Tron: Ares hasn’t yet made back its massive $180 million budget. It’s now doubtful the film will even reach that amount overall, and it’s far from clear if it will ever become profitable, considering estimates suggest it needs to earn around $450 million to break even.

Although reviews for Tron: Ares are mixed, with a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes, that might not explain why it’s not doing well in theaters. The previous Tron movie, Tron: Legacy, also received mixed reviews (51%) but still earned over $400 million worldwide.

Plus, audiences seem to be enjoying Ares – it has an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ rating from CinemaScore, suggesting it’s resonating with viewers.

I’m not sure it’s generating huge buzz right now, but I really think this movie has the potential to grow into something special. It feels like it could quietly become a beloved cult classic, just like the first two films in the series – I can see its fanbase really building over time!

It will likely take a very long time for Tron: Ares to become profitable, and it might not ever happen. Although revenue from video-on-demand, DVD/Blu-ray sales, and streaming services will contribute to its earnings, the film still needs to generate a lot more money. This could mean that the potential Tron 4 hinted at in the movie’s ending might not be made.
