The new movie, *Tron: Ares*, is now playing in theaters and continues the story of the digital world first explored in the original *Tron* (1982) and then in *Tron: Legacy* (2010). Because so much has changed in computer and digital technology since the previous films, *Ares* arrives at a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly developing. It’s fitting, then, that the movie hints at a bigger story about how AI will change our world.
The conclusion of *Tron: Ares*, including the scene after the credits, sets up the next part of the story and future movies. This involves a surprising twist for a key character and a highly anticipated, though brief, appearance from another.
Obviously, MAJOR SPOILERS Follow!
Tron: Ares Addresses the Fate of Legacy‘s Characters (Ending Explained)
As a big fan of *Tron: Legacy*, I always wondered what happened to Sam Flynn, Kevin’s son, and especially Quorra – that amazing digital being who actually became a real person! *Tron: Ares* doesn’t totally ignore what happened in *Legacy*, but it doesn’t really pick up that story thread either, which is a little disappointing.
The film begins with a fast-paced sequence of news reports shown as digital graphics. These reports reveal that Sam Flynn unexpectedly stepped down as CEO of ENCOM and put the Kim sisters – with Eve (Greta Lee) as their leader – in charge. The Kims then led ENCOM in a high-stakes competition against Dillinger Systems, a company run by Ed Dillinger’s daughter, Elisabeth (Gillian Anderson), and her ambitious son, Julian (Evan Peters). Julian’s attempt to win this race using cutting-edge artificial intelligence sparks the central conflict of *Tron: Ares*. We don’t learn what happened to Sam Flynn until the very end, hinting at a possible future storyline that could connect to other *Tron* films.
The ending of *Tron: Ares* shows Ares, the Master Control Program (played by Jared Leto), succeeding in transferring his consciousness to the real world – escaping the thirty-minute decay limit of his physical form. He and his allies manage to stop an attack on the city led by Dillinger Systems and Athena (Jodie Turner-Smith), a program who was once Ares’ friend but became his enemy. After the battle, Ares disappears, choosing to explore the human world and live a life of freedom.
Ares eventually reaches out to Eve with a postcard describing his adventures. He reveals he’s discovered other programs from the Grid are now living in the real world. While looking at photos, Ares finds pictures of Sam and Quorra, and one recent photo of Olivia Wilde wearing a hoodie, implying that’s what Quorra looks like now as a real person. Ares suggests he plans to find Quorra and ask for her help understanding how to navigate and influence the human world.
The Return of Sark (Mid-Credits Scene)
Okay, so in the third act of *Tron: Ares*, things really fall apart for Julian Dillinger. His whole plan to become ridiculously wealthy crashes and burns – the tech he thought would make him a trillionaire is actually perfected by Eve and ENCOM. Even worse, his digital creations, Ares and Athena, betray him, and Athena accidentally kills his own mother in the process. Cornered by the police, Dillinger makes a desperate move: he fires up his digital laser and basically uploads himself into the Dillinger Systems Grid. It’s a pretty intense moment!
Julian faced a disaster: ENCOM’s attack and Ares’ revolt had wrecked the Grid, leaving it in ruins. Amidst the wreckage of the control tower, he discovered a hidden compartment containing a special user disc – the one formerly used by Sark, the main villain and general from the original *Tron* (played by David Warner). As soon as Julian touched the disc, he began to change, with digital armor resembling Sark’s forming around him. This suggests Julian is taking on his grandfather’s digital identity and will become an even more dangerous presence within Dillinger’s systems until he can escape. Given that *Tron: Ares* already showed Julian to be a cunning and malicious hacker, this new power makes him incredibly formidable…
The new film *Tron: Ares* hints at a larger, continuing storyline. However, its success will depend on how well it performs at the box office.
Tron: Ares is now playing in theaters.
