Tron: Ares Projected to Match Box Office Record In Opening Weekend

Disney, once the clear leader in movie ticket sales, has faced some challenges at the box office in 2025. While *Lilo & Stitch* was a successful hit this summer, earning over $1 billion, several other Disney films-including *Captain America: Brave New World*, *Thunderbolts* and *Elio*-didn’t perform as well as expected. Even *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*, with $519.2 million worldwide, didn’t draw the crowds Disney hoped for. The studio is looking forward to potential successes like *Zootopia 2* and *Avatar: Fire and Ash*, but first, they’re hoping *Tron: Ares*, releasing in October, will be a big hit. Initial predictions for that sci-fi movie are now available.

Tron: Ares is predicted to make around $44 million in its first weekend in the US, according to Deadline. This is nearly the same amount as the original Tron: Legacy earned when it came out in 2010 (just over $44 million), potentially making Ares have the biggest opening weekend of any film in the Tron series. The very first Tron movie, released in 1982, opened with $4.7 million domestically.

Could Tron: Ares Exceed Box Office Projections?

Many films released this year have exceeded initial box office predictions, performing surprisingly well during their opening weekends. This is especially true for successful horror movies, but some big-budget studio films have also defied expectations. Positive reviews and strong word-of-mouth helped films like *Superman* and *The Fantastic Four: First Steps* achieve impressive openings. This trend shows just how difficult it is to forecast box office success now that moviegoing habits have shifted since the pandemic. For example, almost no one predicted *The Conjuring: Last Rites* would break box office records.

With a bit of luck, *Tron: Ares* could become a surprising box office success, particularly if critics like it. It’s entering a relatively clear market, launching in early fall when most studios focus on releasing films aimed at awards season. By the time it hits theaters, the other popular movies still playing – like *One Battle After Another* and *The Smashing Machine* – won’t appeal to the same sci-fi audience as *Tron*. Plus, *Tron: Ares* will be shown in high-quality formats like IMAX, which could attract more viewers and increase its earnings.

The *Tron* series boasts a dedicated fanbase. While *Tron: Legacy* didn’t perform strongly at the box office, earning only $409.9 million globally on a $170 million budget – a major factor in delaying a third film – it has since gained a strong cult following. Now might be the perfect time for a new *Tron* movie, considering how much technology and artificial intelligence impact our lives. *Tron: Ares*’ themes could really resonate with audiences and potentially be a bigger success than expected.

Disney is building excitement for *Tron: Ares* with a Comic-Con presentation and preview clips that emphasize the franchise’s history and the new film’s modern themes. With a lack of big, visually impressive films in theaters recently, *Tron: Ares* has the potential to be a stunning and thought-provoking experience. If it succeeds, it could even surpass *Legacy* and become the highest-grossing *Tron* movie of all time.
