Tropic Thunder is considered one of the funniest Hollywood comedies of recent years, consistently delivering big laughs. While the film has many memorable parts, Tom Cruise’s hilarious portrayal of the aggressive studio executive Les Grossman really stands out. He quickly became a fan favorite, leading to talks of a spin-off movie. Although Tropic Thunder came out almost 20 years ago and that spin-off never happened, Justin Theroux, who co-wrote and starred in the original film, has some new information.
While promoting the new season of Fallout (premiering December 17th on Prime), Justin Theroux discussed the potential for a spin-off series centered around his character, Les Grossman. He explained that they’ve explored several ideas for the show, but currently, there are no concrete plans in motion. Theroux shared he has some concepts he’s pitched, but confirmed there’s no start date or active development happening at this time. He expressed hope that the spin-off will eventually come to fruition.
Now Is the Perfect Time for a Les Grossman Spinoff

Although we’re still waiting for a firm start date, Theroux’s recent news is positive. It suggests the project is still moving forward, and there’s reason to believe it will eventually happen. Considering how long it’s been, it would have been easy for someone to cancel it, but that hasn’t happened. It’s good to know Theroux is still enthusiastic about it. While a twenty-year gap between releases isn’t perfect, now might actually be a good time for the Les Grossman spinoff to become a reality.
Tropic Thunder is a clever satire that makes fun of the movie industry – everything from endless action sequels to actors who take their roles way too seriously. While many of the things the movie joked about are still around today, Hollywood has changed a lot since Tropic Thunder came out (it was released the same summer as the first Iron Man!). With the growth of streaming, shared movie universes, and big studio mergers, there’s a lot of new material for a potential sequel, and the character of Les Grossman could be used to highlight just how wild things have become.
It’s tough to make a good comedy sequel or spinoff, and revisiting older comedies is often a gamble. However, a spinoff focusing on the character Les Grossman, from the movie Tropic Thunder, might actually work well now. If it had come out right after the original, it would have felt repetitive. But with the changes in Hollywood over the years, a new Les Grossman story could offer a fresh and relevant commentary on the film industry today. While it would still have the same comedic spirit as Tropic Thunder, it could explore new ideas and put the always-willing Tom Cruise in a series of hilarious, frustrating situations.
Some believe Tropic Thunder, especially the character of Les Grossman, worked best as a standalone film. Tom Cruise’s hilarious and surprising performance was a unique moment that would be hard to recreate. However, if Ben Stiller (Theroux) has more strong ideas, exploring a sequel could be worthwhile. With successful spoofs like The Naked Gun and the planned Spaceballs II proving popular, there’s definitely a place for a sharp satire of the entertainment industry. Hopefully, the next update on a spinoff will include news about when filming might begin.
