Earlier this year, Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of HBO’s True Detective, hinted at a potential new season featuring original stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who last appeared in the show’s first season. However, Woody Harrelson has now stated he has no plans to reprise his role as Detective Marty Hart, effectively ruling out a return to the series.
Woody Harrelson recently discussed the possibility of reprising his role in True Detective during an interview on Today. While he found his co-star Matthew McConaughey’s suggestion of a reunion amusing, Harrelson said he isn’t interested in returning to the show, according to People magazine.
He described Matthew as funny, but quickly added that he doesn’t think a second season would be a good idea. He felt the first season ended perfectly and worried that continuing the show would ruin what they had already achieved.
Does Harrelson Saying He’ll Never Return to True Detective Spell Doom For the Franchise?
Woody Harrelson might be right to want to leave his performance in True Detective as it is. He and Matthew McConaughey both received Emmy nominations for their roles, and both actors were highly praised by critics. That season remains incredibly popular, only surpassed recently by Season 4 in terms of critical reception. Despite Harrelson’s lack of interest in returning, the future of True Detective doesn’t look bleak.
Season 4 marked a significant change for the show. While Nic Pizzolatto continued as an executive producer, Issa Lopez took on the roles of showrunner, writer, and director for this season, titled Night Country. Starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives in Alaska, the season follows their investigation into the disappearance of eight men from a research facility. It received widespread praise and achieved record viewership for the series. Issa Lopez will return for a fifth season, expected to air in 2027.
Although Season 4 of True Detective did well, its creator, Nic Pizzolatto, publicly criticized Night Country. This made his later suggestion of a new season featuring the original stars somewhat surprising. Considering his criticism and the success of Night Country‘s creator, Issa López, it’s uncertain if HBO would want to work with Pizzolatto again. Furthermore, True Detective has always been an anthology series, meaning each season tells a completely new story. While Night Country had some links to Season 1, it still stood alone. Bringing back the original characters would be a significant change for the show – and a risky one, as other anthology series haven’t always succeeded when revisiting past characters.
