The Dominion, as it were, reported most curious figures regarding the consumer price index (CPI) for March, though the reason for such a phenomenon may occasion no small degree of surprise.
Trump’s Policies, Unintentionally, Lighten Canadian Purses Ahead of Election 🤣
President Donald Trump is, perchance, considered a figure of no great esteem in Canada. His pronouncements concerning the annexation of the country, with the intention of transforming it into the “51st state,” have left a distinctly disagreeable taste in the mouths of nearly every Canuck. Yet, on Tuesday last, Statistics Canada announced that inflation had diminished from 2.6 in February to a more modest 2.3 in March, owing, in no small part, to Trump’s policies. One might say, he’s helping whether they like it or not! 🤷♀️
The primary instigators in this deceleration of inflation were the reduced prices of fuel and the alluring discounts on travel tours. It seems Canadians, in their wisdom, have curtailed their sojourns to the U.S. The cost of travel tours, in particular, experienced a decline of 4.7% in March, while the expense of air travel to the U.S. plummeted by a staggering 12% year-over-year, as per the meticulous records of Statistics Canada. 🤔
All of this unfolds amidst a most unprecedented election, one which has, in some inexplicable fashion, placed Trump at its very heart. Following nearly a decade of liberal governance, Canada’s economy has, shall we say, taken a turn for the worse, with GDP per capita now trailing that of its far more substantial southern neighbor. Housing costs have doubled, immigration has proceeded with unchecked abandon, and the former Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has, with remarkable candor, conceded that his immigration policy was an unmitigated disaster. Crime, too, has soared to such heights as to bestow upon Canada the rather dubious distinction of being the “car theft capital of the world,” where a motorcar vanishes every five minutes. 🚗💨

This rather bleak state of affairs, which conservative commentators have termed “the lost Liberal decade,” had bestowed upon the pro-crypto Canadian Conservative Party leader, Pierre Poilievre, an almost certain path to the Prime Minister’s office. That is, until Trump, with his characteristic lack of restraint, uttered the fateful words, “51st state.” Conservatives and liberals alike condemned the U.S. president’s rhetoric, and, quite unexpectedly, the new Liberal Party leader and current unelected Prime Minister, Mark Carney, began to ascend in the polls. 📈
Any association with Trump, even so much as being labeled a conservative in certain circles, now elicits shunning glances in Canada. But perhaps Tuesday’s unexpectedly low inflation figures, an unintentional consequence of Trump’s rather impetuous rhetoric, may serve as some consolation for the economic tribulations that likely await all Canadians should Carney and his team of inept Liberal ideologues secure another election. One can only hope for the best, and perhaps a touch of good fortune. 🍀
