For many years, this studio has been churning out some of the most significant films in the medium, all thanks to the numerous creative minds they’ve nurtured throughout their long career. Regrettably, one such creative talent, voice actor Tsunehiko Kamijo, has departed at the age of 85. With this sad news comes an opportunity to reminisce about Kamijo’s past, honor his contributions, and revisit some of the iconic characters that he breathed life into.

On August 1st, we sadly announce the passing of Tsunehiko Kamijo, represented by KeiSeven Nakamuraya, on July 22nd, 2025, at a hospital near his home in Nagano Prefecture, due to old age. Surrounded by loved ones, he passed away peacefully. We express our deepest gratitude for the support and kindness shown towards him throughout his life. In accordance with Kamijo’s wishes and those of his family, a private funeral and memorial service will be held, and there will be no farewell ceremony. Condolence gifts and offerings will not be accepted as per the deceased’s request. We kindly ask for your understanding during this difficult time.

Celebrating Tsunehiko Kamijo’s Life

To clarify, Tsunehiko Kamijo was a prominent voice actor for Studio Ghibli, lending his voice to several renowned films from this esteemed anime studio. His roles in these productions included Chichiyaku in Spirited Away, Gonza in Princess Mononoke, and Mamma Aiuto Boss in Porco Rosso. Additionally, he played Cash in the Doraemon film, Doraemon Nobita’s Great Adventure in The South Seas. Beyond these anime roles, Kamijo also voiced Sebastian from The Little Mermaid and Alan-a-Dale from Robin Hood for the Japanese versions of these Disney movies.

During his career, Tsunehiko Kamijo, a gifted voice actor, delved into various aspects of entertainment. Originating from Nagano Prefecture, Japan in 1940, Kamijo embarked on his journey as a singer, earning an award for his vocal prowess in 1962. He then ventured onto the stage, participating in plays like Fiddler on The Roof, Man of La Mancha, and My Fair Lady . Furthermore, he took roles in Japanese television dramas, with his last appearance being in 2014 for the project, Trick Shinsaku Special 3. Kamijo’s skill was not confined to a single medium, making him dearly missed by admirers of all his diverse works.
