Hollywood loves remaking horror movies – it’s been a common practice for nearly a century, going all the way back to the 1930s and 40s. With new remakes like The Mummy, The Faculty, and The Entity on the way, one 46-year-old horror classic is leaving the Tubi streaming service soon.
John Carpenter is a celebrated director in the horror genre, so it’s not surprising that some of his films have been remade. Rupert Wainwright’s 2005 remake of Carpenter’s 1980 film, The Fog, revisited the story of a coastal town terrorized by the ghosts of sailors wronged a century earlier. Now, the 2005 remake has been added to Tubi’s list of movies leaving the platform soon, and will likely no longer be available to stream by the end of the month.
The Fog Remake Couldn’t Live Up to John Carpenter’s Classic
Horror remakes often disappoint, and unfortunately, the remake of The Fog didn’t change that reputation. It’s frequently ranked among the worst horror remakes ever made, receiving a shockingly low 4% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes – a stark contrast to the original’s impressive 76% rating. What’s worse, audiences didn’t enjoy it much either, giving it a mere 19% score. The remake lost the slow-building suspense of the original, opting instead for predictable jump scares and unconvincing special effects, making it feel more like a low-budget TV movie than a worthy update to a classic.
While the remake of The Fog doesn’t surpass the original, it’s a decent horror film on its own. It successfully creates a unique atmosphere by moving the story to Antonio Island, Oregon, and offers a quicker, more intense version of the classic tale. The movie boasts some impressively brutal and imaginative death scenes, and the fog itself is genuinely creepy. The cast is also visually appealing, with Selma Blair particularly strong as Stevie Wayne, bringing a cool, modern edge to the role. Ultimately, The Fog doesn’t succeed as a remake, but it’s still a fun, if not particularly memorable, thriller.
Where to Stream The Fog After It Leaves Tubi?
Right now, the recent remake of The Fog is only available to stream on Tubi. If it doesn’t move to another streaming service—which hasn’t happened yet—it will no longer be available online. However, you can still rent or buy the movie digitally. The original 1980 The Fog directed by John Carpenter is currently streaming on Plex, Pluto TV, and The Roku Channel.
