The mid-2000s saw a surge in horror remakes. After films like The Ring and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre did well, many classic horror movies from the 1970s and 80s were updated for the big screen – think House of Wax, Halloween, and The Last House on the Left. While some were more popular than others, many are still enjoyed today. However, Tubi subscribers don’t have much time left to stream two of these 2006 remakes.
Tubi is removing two horror remakes at the end of the month: The Hills Have Eyes and When a Stranger Calls. Both films originally premiered in theaters in 2006 and are updated versions of popular movies from the 1970s. Alexandre Aja directed The Hills Have Eyes, a terrifying story about a family stalked by cannibals, while Simon West helmed When a Stranger Calls, a suspenseful thriller featuring a teenage babysitter tormented by a mysterious and dangerous killer.
The Hills Have Eyes and When a Stranger Calls Proved the Success of Horror Remakes
While the remakes of The Hills Have Eyes and When a Stranger Calls didn’t receive great reviews (they scored lower on Rotten Tomatoes than the original 1970s films), they were definitely successful at the box office. Both films earned around $70 million despite costing only about $15 million to make, proving that audiences were interested in updated versions of classic horror movies and validating the potential of horror remakes in the mid-2000s. They tapped into a sense of nostalgia while offering something new.
These two films weren’t just box office hits; they showed that classic stories could be successfully updated for today’s audiences with a faster, more intense style of filmmaking. The Hills Have Eyes remains one of the most highly regarded horror remakes, improving on the original in almost every way – from its shocking practical effects to its stronger acting, cinematography, and emotional depth, including a more developed story for the villains. When a Stranger Calls took the most suspenseful part of the original – the terrifying first 20 minutes – and expanded it into a full-length film packed with tension and psychological horror.
Where to Stream The Hills Have Eyes and When a Stranger Calls After They Leave Tubi?
It’s currently unclear where you can stream The Hills Have Eyes and When a Stranger Calls. Right now, these horror remakes are only available to watch for free on Tubi. Streaming services change what they offer all the time, so they might show up on other platforms soon, but as of March 2026, they haven’t been added to any major streaming services. You can still rent or buy them online if you want to watch them.
