Most remakes don’t live up to the originals—they rarely even come close. But in 2010, Joel and Ethan Coen surprised everyone with their reimagining of a classic Western, which many consider superior to the original. Now, 15 years later, the film is available to stream for free on Tubi, making it a great watch for those who haven’t seen it yet.
The movie we’re talking about is True Grit, a remake by the Coen brothers of the classic 1969 John Wayne film. This new version features Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn – a role that originally earned Wayne an Academy Award four decades earlier. The 2010 film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, making her film debut, along with Matt Damon and Josh Brolin.
Many John Wayne devotees would consider it disrespectful to say the Coen brothers’ version is superior, but watching the two films one after the other makes a strong case for it. The Coens improve upon almost every aspect of the original – the acting is much stronger, the visuals are better, and the film delves more deeply into the theme of grief.
This movie centers on a young girl seeking revenge for her father’s murder, and she teams up with a quirky, often-intoxicated U.S. Marshal named Rooster Cogburn. The film’s success truly hinges on the connection between these two characters, and the performances by Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges are a major reason the remake works so well. Both actors are phenomenal, and it’s no surprise they received Academy Award nominations – though it’s a pity neither of them ultimately won. Steinfeld, who was only 14 years old during filming, remains one of the youngest actresses ever nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
