Tubi Just Saved a Canceled Sci-Fi Series You’ve Definitely Never Seen

Approximately two years after it was canceled, a science fiction series written by Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm (from Boomerang) that had been discarded has been resurrected. As reported by TVline, streaming service Tubi is taking on the role of savior for the cancelled series Demascus, planning to debut it as a Tubi Original. Initially, AMC had ordered the series in 2022 and even completed production before deciding not to broadcast the six-episode series as planned. Thanks to Tubi’s intervention, the series will finally air on television next month for the first time.

This show centers around a character named Demascus, a 33-year-old man, embarking on a journey of self-exploration and delving into the emerging area of digital psychiatry that could help him uncover his true identity. In the leading role, we find Okieriete Onaodowan, well known for his work on Station 19. Alongside him are actors Janet Hubert from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Caleb Eberhardt, Shakira Ja’nai Paye, and Martin Lawrence, who will appear in a recurring capacity. The series is set to debut on Tubi on Thursday, August 7th.

Samuel Harowitz, Tubi’s SVP of Content Acquisition and Partnerships, shared that they are thrilled to present ‘Demascus’, a unique mix of comedy and sci-fi that pushes boundaries while keeping viewers entertained. At Tubi, we celebrate stories that intrigue, stimulate, amuse, and deeply connect with dedicated audiences, and ‘Demascus’ is the perfect example of the kind of innovative storytelling we’re proud to showcase.

Initially, Demascus was created under AMC Network’s “scripts-to-series” approach, a method where potential series were developed in writers’ rooms. If these projects proved successful, they would transition directly to a full series. Chisholm played a significant role as a co-showrunner alongside Kirk A. Moore, who had experience working on Marvel Television’s “Marvel’s Runaways” on Hulu. Mark Johnson and Myki Bajaj from Gran Via Productions oversaw the project, with Johnson having previously worked on popular shows such as “Better Call Saul” and “Breaking Bad”.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on “Demascus,” a once-canceled series that has found new life thanks to Tubi. Producer Mark Johnson, in his words, celebrates this opportunity, expressing gratitude towards AMC and Tubi for making it possible for this thought-provoking series to reach audiences.

In the intriguing world of “Demascus,” creator Tearrance Chisholm invites us to ponder one of life’s most profound questions: What truly makes a good man? His titular character serves as our guide, leading us through a journey filled with surprising and nuanced answers.

I applaud AMC Studios for sharing our belief in this unique blend of comedy and drama, and Tubi for standing firmly behind its decision to air this series. Here’s to the power of storytelling and the chance for “Demascus” to captivate viewers everywhere!

Over the past few years, Tubi has been working hard to expand its collection of exclusive shows, known as Tubi Originals. Although it hasn’t yet matched the success of some other streaming platforms, it has been concentrating on producing high-quality, unique content. Their latest release is a special episode titled Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, which caters to fans who were disappointed when the SyFy series was canceled.

Demascus will finally air all six episodes on Tubi on August 7th.
