As a longtime wrestling fan and follower of the industry, I’m thrilled to see professional wrestling at an all-time high with new deals and opportunities emerging left and right. The recent WWE deal with Netflix has opened doors for other companies, and it looks like free streaming platform Tubi is looking to cash in on this success by creating their own wrestling program.
WWE’s historic 2025 deal with Netflix, worth over $300 million, paved the way for other companies to secure significant deals. AEW President Tony Khan acknowledged the positive impact this deal had on AEW, while a new platform is reportedly planning to enter the professional wrestling scene by acquiring its own promotion.
According to Fightful Select’s latest report, streaming platform Tubi is considering launching its own wrestling program instead of buying an existing promotion. This means they plan to create a new wrestling venture from scratch, taking advantage of professional wrestling’s current popularity and the growing interest in the industry.
Freddie Prinze Jr., who is an actor and formerly wrote for WWE, has openly talked about establishing his own promotion and pursuing a television contract. He’s kept fans informed throughout the process on his podcast, sharing both thrilling and less-than-exciting progress reports. A few years ago, Tubi expressed interest in obtaining MLW, but this was met with an antitrust lawsuit against WWE in 2022 that alleged interference in the deal. The case was settled in 2023, making it unsurprising that Tubi would choose to start anew this time around.
Professional Wrestling at an All-Time High
When All Elite Wrestling (AEW) was established in 2019 and secured a television contract with Warner Bros. Discovery, it marked a significant shift in the wrestling industry for the first time in decades. As they continue to negotiate their next deal, which is expected to significantly impact the future, AEW isn’t alone in making waves. TNA has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity due to its collaboration with WWE.
TNA has experienced remarkable achievement, drawing in large crowds with record-breaking ticket sales. The two entities have recently engaged in multiple talent swaps. In terms of women’s wrestling, WOW – Women of Wrestling is comparable. With their near-ubiquitous presence on US television screens, WOW was noted by The New York Times in 2022 as the most-watched wrestling promotion outside of WWE and AEW.
