I’m absolutely thrilled that “Dandadan” is back for another season this summer! It’s a wild and enigmatic ride, following our heroes in their pursuit of Ken Takakura’s lost privates, Okarun’s most prized possessions. In the latest escapade, Momo Ayase, Okarun, and I have taken on a new ally, Jiji, who is battling a sinister spirit lurking in his mountainous home. The first episode of this season maintains the series’ trademark anarchy, plunging us into a whirlwind of unexpected and spooky events. Throughout it all, Momo, the fearless female lead, once again steals the show as she navigates some of the scariest and most pulse-pounding situations you can imagine. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Just as I found myself in a pickle, much like my very first encounter with the Serpo aliens in the pilot episode, the kickoff of this new season finds me in another hair-raising predicament – this time, surrounded by the aggressive Kito family members. But, just when all hope seems lost, the enigmatic Turbo Granny swoops in once more, her unexpected intervention not only providing a welcome comedic relief but also carrying a deeper significance. Time and again, her unwavering protection of me is both profoundly moving and symbolically meaningful.
Turbo Granny Continues To Be Momo’s Savior
Initially, Turbo Granny’s peculiar actions in the early episodes of season 1 might have seemed oddly amusing. However, a more profound significance emerges when Granny Seiko discloses her background, revealing that Turbo Granny’s behaviors have always been motivated by safeguarding young girls. In Episode 4 of Dandadan, we learn that Turbo Granny materializes in locations where girls, especially the young ones, have suffered physical abuse or untimely, irrational deaths. Her swift focus on men’s private areas implies a symbolic act intended to deter sexual assault. In light of this context, her sudden appearance in the pilot episode, transporting from Momo’s phone, can be understood as a timely intervention in response to Momo’s distress, signifying that she was there specifically to protect her.
In the first episode of Season 2, a recurring pattern unfolds. When Momo nearly falls victim to an attack by the Kito family men at a hot spring, Turbo Granny makes another appearance, swiftly overpowering and scaring them away. Casually starting to bathe afterwards, she admits she had secretly stowed herself in Momo’s bag to enjoy the renowned hot spring. Yet, her arrival at the critical moment of attack suggests that her true purpose was protection. Throughout the series, Momo often finds herself in precarious situations, a fact not lost on Turbo Granny. This likely explains why she stays nearby, keeping a watchful eye, eventually emerging as Momo’s guardian in the world of Dandadan.
Dandadan Season 2 is currently airing and is available to stream on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
