TUXEDO, a computer manufacturer, has cancelled plans for a Linux laptop powered by the Snapdragon X Elite processor. They stated that developing the laptop proved too difficult, and the Snapdragon X Elite wasn’t as well-suited for Linux as they had hoped.
TUXEDO is a company that builds computers specifically for the Linux operating system. They offer both laptops and desktop PCs guaranteed to work with Linux, and recently announced plans for a new laptop powered by an ARM-based Snapdragon X Elite processor – which would have been their first device of that type.
We’ve temporarily stopped work on the device. The company explains that building it was more difficult than anticipated because of its internal structure, and it doesn’t work as well with Linux as they’d hoped. Specifically, they weren’t able to get the battery to last as long as expected when running Linux, and there’s currently no way to update the device’s basic software or control the fan using Linux. Features like virtualization and fast USB4 transfer speeds aren’t possible with this model, and while video decoding *could* work technically, most programs don’t support it.
The laptop took just over 18 months to develop, but the company decided against continuing work on it. They explained that by the time it launched, the Snapdragon X Elite processor would be over two years old, and it wouldn’t make sense to release a device with outdated technology.
The company is considering creating a Linux laptop powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X2 Elite processor, but isn’t making any promises yet. They’ll be looking closely at the chip to see if it performs well and if they can use work already done on the previous X1E processor to speed up development. They’ll only decide to move forward if they can reuse a substantial amount of that existing work.
I was really excited about the possibility of a TUXEDO laptop running on the Snapdragon X Elite, but it looks like that’s stalled for now. It’s unclear if they’ll pick it up again, and honestly, given how much trouble they’ve had getting everything working smoothly, I’m not holding my breath. It’s a bummer for Linux fans like me who were hoping for a powerful, efficient machine!
Many Windows 11 laptops now use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite processor, like the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 and Dell XPS 13. These laptops are receiving positive reviews because Qualcomm’s chip design delivers impressive all-day battery life without compromising speed or performance.
Qualcomm has released the Snapdragon X2 Elite, the next generation of its PC processors. These new chips offer a significant performance boost, with improvements to graphics and a greater number of processing cores.
