TV is incredibly popular, and in 2025, there are more shows to choose from than ever before – from regular network programs and high-end cable series to the endless stream of content on streaming services. Some shows gain a devoted following, while others leave viewers wishing they’d stopped watching sooner. As someone who usually finishes every series they start, I can definitely relate to the shows everyone is talking about – and I’ve been there too.
A recent Reddit discussion highlighted TV moments that drove viewers to immediately stop watching. I wasn’t shocked by many of the shows mentioned repeatedly, though a few were surprising. Overall, the comments raised some very good points about what makes a show unwatchable.
Many viewers said The Walking Dead was the show they stopped watching most often, with Glenn’s death, a previous fake-out surrounding his death, Beth’s unsatisfying storyline, Carl being bitten by a walker, and Negan’s continued survival being common reasons. I understand why – Beth’s departure was the point where I almost quit, and Glenn’s initial near-death experience under a dumpster was another. I probably should have stopped watching before Glenn actually met Negan and his bat, Lucille.
Bobby’s death on 9-1-1 caused a huge reaction from viewers, with many expressing their frustration online, especially on Reddit. The show’s decision to kill off Peter Krause’s character was a real shock earlier this year. Fans also revisited past moments of heartbreak from the show *Bones*, which ran from 2005 to 2017, focusing on issues with the final seasons’ portrayal of the main couple and the tragic fate of the character Sweets, played by John Francis Daley.
I really connected with people who talked about *Downton Abbey* – I still remember being shocked when Matthew died in a Christmas episode and losing interest in the show completely, even though I love Maggie Smith! I was surprised to see *The 100* mentioned so often, considering it was on The CW. People brought up Lexa’s death, and honestly, if I’d stopped watching then, I wouldn’t have had to sit through the disappointing way Bellamy’s story ended.
Several shows were criticized for shocking or upsetting plot points. Orange is the New Black was called out for the tragic death of Poussey, and Grey’s Anatomy faced criticism for its many dramatic twists over the years, particularly how the character Alex Karev left the show. Arrow was also mentioned for a storyline where Felicity unexpectedly regained her ability to walk and then abruptly left Oliver.

Viewers definitely had plenty of shocking moments to discuss in the final seasons of *Game of Thrones*. While I was already invested by that point, the storyline that almost made me stop watching was Sansa’s marriage to, and abuse by, Ramsay in Season 5. Many people pointed to Joel’s death in Season 1 of *The Last of Us* as a huge shock, especially if they weren’t familiar with the video game or hadn’t heard about it beforehand – which was my case.
I’ve been reading about a bunch of shows lately, and it’s interesting to see what really resonated with people. Things like *Prison Break*, *Dexter*, *Sons of Anarchy*, *The League*, and *For All Mankind* all got a lot of attention. Honestly, hearing about all the awful plot twists that drove viewers away from other series makes me appreciate the shows I *did* enjoy even more. Though, don’t get me wrong, I’m still not planning on revisiting *The Walking Dead* after Season 4!
Many popular shows stayed great for a while, and you can still find them on streaming services if you want to revisit them. You could either finish a series you started or simply rewatch the parts you enjoyed, choosing to ignore any disappointing later episodes.
