The Twilight series stormed movie theaters with the release of its initial installment, “Twilight”, in 2008. For those who hadn’t delved into Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance novels, serving as the movies’ foundation, “Twilight” was their first encounter with Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, Jacob Black, and other enduring characters. Each movie offered a unique contribution to the film industry, largely due to the intricate love story, family dynamics, and more. The primary focus of “Twilight” centered around the evolution of Edward and Bella’s relationship, as well as his (and his family’s) efforts to safeguard her from other vampires. In this film, Jackson Rathbone joined the Cullen family as Jasper Hale, a character who has expressed interest in having a prequel.
At a panel chaired by Maggie Lovitt (moderator) during an event organized by Collider, the actor discussed his experiences as Jasper and expressed interest in a hypothetical prequel focusing on the character’s backstory and growth that was underrepresented in the movie franchise.
I’ve always been captivated by Jasper, a man who carries a profound darkness within. At seventeen, he faced the brutal reality of war, an experience that has left deep scars on his soul. Yet, it’s this very darkness I yearn to delve into. What intrigues me is how Alice enters his life as a beacon of hope. She isn’t just there to guide him through life’s events, but to remind him of the love that exists for him and his inherent worth.
Rathbone’s persona sometimes found it challenging to adhere to the Cullens’ non-human eating habits, which involved consuming animal products instead of humans. Additionally, Jasper Hale possessed the ability to influence feelings.
Jasper’s character development across the movie franchise touched a chord with Rathbone, who has spent significant effort supporting addiction recovery initiatives and offering opportunities for people to start anew.
In my personal perspective, I fix phones on a daily basis, but beyond that, our work extends to helping individuals recover and rebuild their lives. Providing someone with a second opportunity can transform them into a completely different person. However, denying that chance simply pushes the problem back into society. It’s like sentencing someone to perpetual imprisonment, which I view as inhumane. Therefore, I strongly advocate for second chances, third chances, and redemption.
How Jackson Rathbone Described His ‘Twilight’ Character
The actor portrayed his character as deeply self-critical, yearning for affection and reassurance that past wrongs could be pardoned. Amidst the movie scenes, Jasper was destined to fall in love with Alice Cullen, eventually integrating into their family. It took considerable effort on his part not to assault Bella, yet he utilized his powers to tranquilize her when she was scared, offering protection alongside Alice as they hid from James. In the film New Moon, Jasper supported the decision to transform Bella into a vampire, thus reducing any inclination towards attacking her.
In an interview with Lexicon, Jackson Rathbone referred to Jasper as “Created by war, birthed from death, rescued by love.” To embody the character, he delved into his own feelings of anger. “To prepare, I’ve been tapping into my anger. I view Jasper wrestling with himself to lead a life of renewed morality. His affection for Alice is what prevents him from being a vampire like James.
