Twisted Batman and Robin Joke Surprisingly Becomes DC Canon

For years, fans have joked about the dynamic between Batman and his various Robin sidekicks, often focusing on how Batman seems to go through a lot of partners in bright costumes. Now, DC Comics has surprisingly turned one of those jokes into a real storyline within a darker corner of their universe.

A recent joke appears in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #48, created by Mark Waid and Marcus To. But this issue doesn’t feature the usual team-up of Superman and Batman. The story actually takes place on Earth-3, a parallel world where everything is flipped – the heroes are villains and vice versa.

The story begins with Owlman, the villainous counterpart to Batman, suggesting a team-up to Ultraman, the evil version of Superman from another Earth. This happens before Owlman and Ultraman created their group, the Crime Syndicate. When Owlman gets back to his headquarters, he finds his assistant, Talon, has been fatally injured.

What dark Batman joke just became Earth-3 canon?

Owlman, showing no remorse, immediately demands another drink. The following scene shows several boys locked in a cage, seemingly waiting their turn to become the next Talon. This is a grim twist on the common joke about Batman having a roster of orphans ready to replace Robin. But on the dark world of Earth-3, this cruel practice is all too real, and Owlman is truly that heartless.

Look, I’ve been following Mark Waid for a while now, and this kind of shocking, dark humor isn’t new for him. Remember Irredeemable from Boom! Studios? That was a really twisted, funny take on the whole ‘hero turns bad’ trope – something we’ve seen a lot. But what’s cool is he can swing the other way too! His Daredevil run was amazing because he actually had Matt Murdock stop being so angsty and go back to being that fun, acrobatic crimefighter he started as. He’s a writer who really knows how to play with expectations.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #48 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
