Peacock has renewed the action-comedy series Twisted Metal for a third season, but with a significant update. The show, which premiered in July 2023, stars Anthony Mackie as a driver working in a dangerous, ruined world. He’s tasked with delivering an important package and gets help from a fellow traveler played by Stephanie Beatriz, known for her role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
The first season of Twisted Metal, featuring Neve Campbell, Thomas Haden Church, wrestler Samoa Joe, and Will Arnett as Sweet Tooth, quickly became a popular show on Peacock. The second season, which premiered the following July, introduced new characters and put even more emphasis on the dangerous competition.
I’m so excited to hear that Twisted Metal is coming back for a third season! It’s a bit of a change behind the scenes though – David Reed, who’s worked on shows like Supernatural and The Boys, is taking over as showrunner and executive producer. Apparently, Michael Jonathan Smith has finished his run on the show, according to Peacock, and David Reed is stepping in to lead things now. I’m really looking forward to seeing what he brings to the series!
Smith is a key creative force behind the action-comedy series, which is based on the popular PlayStation video game. He developed the show alongside the screenwriters of Deadpool, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. This change in leadership comes after a successful second season where the series reached a wide audience, accumulating 993 million minutes viewed and becoming one of Peacock’s most popular returning scripted shows.
The latest episodes, which finished in August, continue the story after the dramatic season 1 finale. John, played by Mackie, and Quiet, played by Beatriz, finally compete in the dangerous tournament that’s central to the series – something fans have been eager to see since the beginning. However, the show decided to hold off on it until season 2. This destructive event is hosted by the villain Calypso, portrayed by Anthony Carrigan, known for his roles in Barry and Superman.
As a huge fan, I’m really excited about what’s coming up! Season 3 throws John and Quiet into the middle of a seriously messy conflict. The last episode of season 2 hinted at this – Carrigan is still causing trouble, having framed them for murder and basically starting a war between two factions, the Insiders and the Outsiders. It’s going to be awesome seeing them face off against a bunch of characters that gamers will instantly recognize!
Award-nominated writer and producer Reed is joining the team behind the Peacock Original series Twisted Metal. He’s known for his work on popular shows like Prime Video’s The Boys, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, The Magicians, Revolution, and Supernatural. Notably, he wrote the finale for season two of The Boys and the episode “Lost in Translation” for Strange New Worlds. He’ll now be focusing on developing the diverse characters in Twisted Metal.
