As a film enthusiast who grew up in the heart of Oklahoma, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I heard about the new Twisters sequel. The original movie was a staple of my childhood, and I can still remember the goosebumps I got watching those intense tornado scenes accompanied by the iconic soundtrack.
The follow-up to the 1996 disaster film “Twister,” directed by Jan de Bont, has arrived, injecting new vigor into the series with up-and-coming actors Daisy Edgar Jones and Glen Powell leading the cast.
As a lifelong film enthusiast and avid music lover, I find myself constantly seeking out movies that deliver both captivating visual storytelling and memorable soundtracks. The new action movie I recently watched definitely falls into this category. Having grown up watching classics like “Mad Max” and “Die Hard,” I have a certain expectation when it comes to the music that accompanies these high-octane films, and this latest release did not disappoint. The epic soundtrack perfectly complemented the pulse-pounding action sequences, creating an immersive experience that left me on the edge of my seat. It’s always refreshing to find a movie that delivers on all fronts, and I highly recommend giving it a watch, especially for fans of the genre who appreciate a well-crafted soundtrack.
However, unlike the first Twister film’s soundtrack filled with pop and rock tunes, the follow-up offers a distinct change as it bursts with country music tracks. Many of these songs are uniquely produced and recorded specifically for the movie.
Discussing why he believed this genre perfectly captured the spirit of storm chasers’ lives, director Lee Isaac Chung expressed in the production notes: “During long hours on the road pursuing tornadoes, having great music is crucial. I enjoyed learning about their favorite songs; it always made me happy.”
In my view, the remarkable screenwriter, Mark L. Smith, infused the initial script with an evocative spirit, meticulously crafting numerous timeless, rock anthems for those captivating road sequences.
When I joined the project, I’d been heavily into Chris Stapleton’s music. So, my mental image for the Tyler Owens (Glen Powell) character was him playing Arkansas on his radio as he drove into a storm, perhaps even a tornado.
“My inspiration spawned a love for country artists in other countries. Since we were creating a movie about individuals pursuing tornadoes along dusty roads, I believed that the rustic red-dirt country genre and the rebellious sound would perfectly suit the film.”
Music enthusiasts will find a variety of tunes from contemporary country musicians like Luke Combs, Lainey Wilson, Miranda Lambert, and Jelly Roll in the lineup.
